14 Days without a BM????
« on: July 03, 2006, 18:12:51 pm »
Hi,

Josh is now 3.5 months old and in the past two weeks has not had one BM - He is very gassy, which smells terrible and seems to be in pain/discomfort when passing wind, but just doesn't poop.

I have tried to call the doctor, but they are closed for the next 2 days and I am at a loss of what to do?

Help!
Dee

Hey Dee,

When my lo was that age he was exclusively breastfed too, and went only about once a week, and once he went for over 2 weeks without going (but boy when he did!  :o ) . Breastmilk is such a perfect food, that there is hardly any waste, so what you are going through is normal and you may not need to do anything. If you think he's in pain though, you could try gas drops, they seemed to help... I used a brand called Ovol. Also, my doctor had told me once to not be concrned about the frequency of the BM, just if they were soft or not. Hope this helps puts your mind at ease!

Hi there!

I also went through the same thing with my little man.  From about 6 weeks until 5.5 months he would consistently poop every 14 days (only after we would use a suppository or the Qtip method).  When he would go it would be a little larger than normal but still the same characteristic bf baby consistency.

Usually going this long between bm's is normal ... however, if your lo is uncomfortable you might want to try and get him to see a Dr somewhere (a walk in clinic or something) to rule out any problems.  Or like Christa said use an over the counter gas relief type rememdy and see if that does the trick.  Gentle massage on the belly also seems to make them more comfortable.  I always would incraese my own fibre intake to see if that would help and it seemed too.

Let us know what happens!

Liam used to poop every 10-14 days at that age, when was getting close to a poop, he stunk the house out... I used to do bicycle pumps with his legs & massage his belly to help him, but it seemed to be the 12-24 hours before that he got a bit "unsettled" then I had a huge mess to clean up.
