How do I use W2S?
« on: July 05, 2006, 14:48:55 pm »
Hi there. Could someone please describe how exactly they've used W2S successfully? My lo (9 weeks old) naps for only 30 minutes at a time and I'm desperately trying to find a way to get him to nap longer as he's always overtired and cries as soon as he wakes from these short naps. It's been this way for the last three weeks and I'm getting really frustrated as he never seems happy except immediately after a feed! I've had to keep reducing A time because he never gets enough sleep. Even when he falls asleep on his own at either stage 2 or stage 3 of the sleep cycle he's unable to transition to the next cycle. I've tried W2S but I haven't been successful so far.

The advice is to stir the baby 5 - 10 minutes before he's due to wake. For a 30 minute cycle I assume this is at the 20 or 25 minute mark. I've tried this at the 20 min mark and then waited for a movement (which he has made). So when he does move should I then watch and wait to see if he'll enter his next sleep cycle by himself after the 30min are up or should I try the pressure method as well just in case? How do I know for sure that he's entered the next sleep cycle?

The 2nd way is to apply pressure to the prevent the jolts from waking him. At the 30 min mark my lo moves his head from one side to the other, flails his arms plus his legs and chest move. I've tried holding down his legs and chest but he still wakes up probably because of his arms. This is a really daft question but do you hold the chest and legs while standing at the foot end of the cot or from the opposite side so that he doesn't see you in case he opens his eyes? I've never tried swaddling and I'm not too sure about doing it in this weather at the moment. They say at this age they shouldn't be fully swaddled so doesn't that mean the arms would still be out anyway?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just not sure if I'm doing it right but I want to persevere as I know it can take some time to see results.

Is he swaddled?  That can realy help with the jolt.

Also if stirring you LO is not working then I would try the pressure method.  Place your hands on his arms and legs so that they can't flail.

Hi Lana

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to let you know that I managed to use the pressure method this morning successfully!! And I hadn't even tried swaddling yet.
I tried both the stirring and pressure, one before the other as I didn't want to risk the stirring method not working.
Lo and behold my ds slept for 1.5 hours this morning, the longest nap he's had since he was about 6 weeks old. My arms and back are still aching from having to lean over his cot to suppress those jolts but I'm just over the moon that on day 2 of trying W2S it worked. Didn't have much luck for the 2nd nap as he woke up fully (maybe wasn't tired enough) and then I (embarrassingly) slept through the next nap as I was lying in bed waiting for the 25 min mark, only to be woken up by his cry after 30 min!
That's what happens when mum's too exhausted to see the sleep training through.........
I'll keep trying the pressure method and see what happens.
