Thumb sucker
« on: July 07, 2006, 19:00:39 pm »
??? I have question regarding my 10 week old.  He is breastfed, but seems to be going 3-4 hours
between feeds.  I am concerned because he has started sucking his thumb and will put himself back to sleep
after around 40 mins.  Sometimes he sleeps for 2 hours and I have to wake him to eat.  He has always been a
good eater, until the last 2 weeks.  Regular bowel movements and lots of wet diapers.  could he just be settling
into a good routine?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site numama!

It sounds like your lo is settling into a very nice routine for you.  Putting himself back to sleep at the 40 min mark is a wonderful milestone!  Waking to feed him is also very common.  I would try to keep his feeds to 3-3.5 hours at this age.  Lots of wet/dirty diapers, generally happy and gaining weight are all good signs.  Sounds like you are doing a great job!  Keep listening to his cues.

Hope that helps

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Hey numama -- I've got a thumbsucker here too and I worried that she wasn't eating when she should be because of her thumb sucking.  If he's having the right number of wet/poopy diapers I would say he's just settling into a nice routine for you.  You do want to keep him eating every 3/3.5 hours if possible because otherwise he may wake more frequently at night to eat (if he's not getting the calories he needs during the day).

My 11 week old son just started the same thing!  He used to always wake up after 45 minutes.  You could set an alarm by it.  Now he has become a real pro at the thumb sucking and only eats every 3 & 1/2 - 4 hours (and goes about 10 hours at night!) and sleeps great during the day!  I was worried at first too, but since he's gaining weight and urinating and having regular bowel movements, I'm just enjoying it!  The only question is, will we ever be able to get them to stop? ;)

:) thanks for the feedback!  I noticed this evening that he wanted to nurse more often, so hopefully I can stick with the 3-3.5 hour schedule and things will move right along! It is nice to know that there are others who are going thru the same things!

Thanks,
numama
