Is it possible to only nurse twice a day?
« on: July 16, 2006, 14:14:14 pm »
I've weaned baby girl to ff during the day (four bottles) and want to continue to bf before bedtime and her feed during the night.  She is 7 weeks wed.  Will my breasts really be able to do this, only feed twice or maybe 3 times a day?  I'm so afraid I'll stop making milk.  I enjoy nursing her before bed and it's easier to bf for her night feed.  Thanks.

I did this with my first baby, although I weaned her during the day when she was older.  I had no problem having enough milk for morning/evening and I didn't have a huge supply to begin with.  I nursed 2x day until she was 18 months.  I think if you do it regularly, you should be fine.

I did a really long weaning process and for a long time I was only doing 2 feeds a day. you're supply will go down, but it'll go down to the amount needed for 2 feeds a day, it won;t stop completely. If/when you want you can go to one feed a day for a while too. :)

It's sometimes a bit tricker to do this when your baby is still only a few weeks old as supply is a bit more vulnerable. Certainly some people move to 1 or 2 feeds successfully but not everyone does. Just keep an eye on how your supply seems to be fairing - You may be absolutely fine but you may need to pump a little at another time to help maintain your supply. Good Luck.

I agree that it really might be tricky to try this so early on.  I weaned to to feeds a day, but not until dd was over a year and my supply and the breastfeeding relationship were very well established.  We kept up those two feeds for almost 10 months.  However, I know some moms can't keep up a supply on only two feeds a day, even after a year.  It really all depends on your body, but I'd guess it's going to be tough to keep up your supply this early on.

Thanks.  I'm hoping I can keep going.  My breasts feel so full before bedtime so far and she's satisfied during her night feeds.  We'll see how it goes.  I enjoy bfing her during these times.
