daytime weaning question
« on: July 12, 2006, 03:11:52 am »
HI all,

I would like to wean the daytime bf's as I'm going back to work at the end of this month and can't pump.  I am following Tracy's suggestion to pump instead of feed and gradually decrease the time.  My question is this:  Do I decrease the pump time gradually to keep up my milk supply in the morning and evening?  or is it just to keep myself comfortable and prevent engorgement.

I'm just wondering, because some days I'm out with my lo( who's 5 months) and I can't pump at the same time I would need to feed her.

Thanks for the help!

I would say that to be on the safe side you should reduce pumping time gradually. The odd day if you are out then it probably would be OK but pay attention to your breasts and watch to see how they cope with missing a session - some boobs are more sensitive than others!

I'm not sure how you are planning it. I'm guessing you are moving to introduce formula in the day? Some mothers mix formula and breastmilk - especially if their LO isn't keen on the taste change initially.

What are you planning on the weekends? Will you go back to breastfeeds in the day? If so, you may need to pump a bit more on Monday/ Tuesday when you go back to work to help your breasts adjust to the increase in supply.

Okay, thanks for the insight!  I think I'll just keep it to formula during the daytime and bf morning and night.

We've been mixing the two together already and she's accepting the formula great!  Thanks again!

Its amazing how the breast will adjust. For months I have been pumping twice a work, but he has three bottles while I am gone. Most Saturday/Sundays he has plenty of milk. In the last 11 months, I have supplemented just twice on the weekend with frozen EBM. Especially the last 2-3 weeks, my milk has dramatically decreased during daytime pumpings, but no problem on Sat/Sun. The boobs are just know exactly what to do for my LO!
