Need some napping help!
« on: July 26, 2006, 02:03:57 am »
My son is 17 weeks.  He is the KING of the 45 minute nap.  He sleeps great at night.  He's down at 7:30 and sometimes will sleep straight through til 7am, other times he's up for a quick 10 minute feed around 5am and then goes back to sleep til 7:30.

From reading message boards and talking with friends, I've realized the 45 minute nap is a VERY common thing at this age.  My question is, is there ANYTHING I can do to break this??

Right now he's on a 3 hour feeding schedule.  I know he could go 4, but it's tricky since he doesn't nap for very long.  Even with the 3 hour schedule, I run into him needing to eat and sleep at the same time in the afternoon.

Going to sleep isn't a problem for him.  I put him down awake in his crib with a lovie(for both naps and at bedtime) and usually he's out within a few minutes without even a peep.  Sometimes he will fuss a little, but it's never more than 5 minutes.  He sleeps with white noise in his room.  We keep the room pitch black.

I feel like he's got the whole going to sleep thing down.  I give him the right environment to sleep in, yet he WILL NOT sleep for longer than 45 minutes during the day.  Occasionally he'll give me an hour, but I'm pretty sure he's waking prior to that and just waiting before he starts crying.  Yes, he does wake up happy from these little naps, but he'll give me an hour and a half max before he's ready for the next one.

Right now, he's waking for the day between 7-7:30 and going down for his first nap somewhere between 8:45-9:15.  I've tried keeping him up a full 2 hours, I've tried putting him down after 1 hour...both result in a 45 minute nap.  The rest of the day, he's usually going down for a nap 1.5 hours after waking from the previous one with increasing fussiness between naps as the day progresses.  By the time the evening gets here he usually takes a 20-30 minute catnap while one of us is holding him before bedtime, otherwise, he just screams.  He's been consistently taking 4 45 minute naps each day yet we're still counting down the minutes until we can start his bath every evening so we can start getting him ready for bed.  I'd love for him to combine these into 2 good naps and maybe a catnap and move him to a 4 hour feeding schedule, but I have no idea where to start.

TIA.

Hi there. I would definitely start moving him to a 4-hour routine - you can do 3.5 for now if that helps transition.

Have you tried wake-to-sleep to get him beyond 45 minutes? You may want to check out the FAQs at the top of this thread...

I haven't tried standing there waiting for him to wake up to get him back to sleep, but I've tried getting him back to sleep after I hear him crying and I have yet to be successful.  I'm going to try standing by his crib waiting for him to wake up tomorrow morning and see if that helps.  How would you go about getting him back to sleep?  Pacifier?  He'll take one if he's REALLY tired, but it's hit and miss.  Sometimes it just makes him mad when I try to put it in.  I guess since I'm not there when he goes to sleep, I'm not sure what I should do to get him BACK to sleep.....

I will be of no help, but I have to say I am going through the EXACT same thing with my 12 week old daughter!  I tried the waiting for the jolt they have at 20 minutes (read about it on here, but don't really understand it) but I don't think it happend unless I missed it.  If you find something that works, please let me know!  When my dd wakes at 30-45 minutes, I think it would be impossible to get her back to sleep.  She just squirms around.  I guess we are moving in too late, but how do you know when they are stirring to wake?  Good luck!

No, rather than waiting for him to wake up fully and get him back to sleep, I mean try wake-to-sleep - see this link:

When would you suggest going in to apply pressure?

I was planning on doing it this morning but I went in 35 minutes after he went to sleep and he was already awake and started laughing the second I walked into the room....not going back to sleep at that point!

I would try sneaking in at maybe 28 or 30 minutes and gently stroking his cheek. If that is enough to make him stir (but not fully wake) great - leave the room. If not, try moving his foot or something else gentle to get him to stir. Be sure to duck/hide - you don't want himt o see you!

Thanks!  I'm going to attempt this with his afternoon nap...his 2nd morning nap has been about 3 catnaps put together while we've been out so I'm HOPING to get in a good one this afternoon...if not we'll attempt it tomorrow am.

It didn't work.  :(

I went in at the 28 minute mark of his nap, stroked his cheek, he didn't move, then I tugged on his lovie and his hand moved and his head turned a little.  I got out of the room quickly, then peeked back in after about 30 seconds...he was still asleep.  Then about 5 minutes later he woke up crying.  How much of a stirring am I looking for?  He's such a light daytime sleeper I'm afraid to do too much because it seems like anything and everything will wake him up completely.

Stacy is the W2S expert - so hopefully she can jump in here with some advice!

His afternoon nap probably wasn't the best one to start with since we were out this morning, but I thought we'd at least give it a shot.  We'll be home all day tomorrow and I'm going to try again with his first morning nap....if I'm successful it'll be his ONLY morning nap...lol.
