The cost of specialist formula in Australia
« on: June 05, 2006, 11:00:05 am »
Hi

My dd is prescribed Nutramigen as she is allergic to milk protein and soya.  We currently live in the UK where a food allergy is considered a medical condition, so we get dd's milk free as it is effectively a medicine.  I have been surfing the site and have just been completely shocked to read that some of you in the states are paying upto $200 per month on this formula.  We are probably moving to Australia later in the year and I am now getting concerned that I might end up with a similar size bill.  Can any australians out there confirm how this kind of thing works on medicare / insurance and if I'm likely to be getting a very big bill?

Thanks

I would ditto the recommendation to contact your new insurance or medicare in Australia and see what is covered.

Here is another resource for you : http://www.mspiguide.com/ go to the bottom of the page and click on the forums. You can post and ask your question there and hopefully find a mom from Australia.

Make sure to watch with the Nutramigen because it does actually contain milk proteins, some babies can tolerate it but many can not. They are just "pre-digested".

I was informed by my doctor that the medicare system will cover the cost of my dd's goats milk as long as we have confimration from relevant specialists of her allergies.  They then put in a special request that when authorised allows you to get your milk from your local chemist.  As long as you qualify to join the Australian medicare system ie resident or citizen then you should have no problems.  Enjoy your move to OZ
