No Breast/No Nap
« on: July 26, 2006, 20:41:10 pm »
Help-I'm looking for advice on getting my 4 month old to nap without being feed to sleep.  This has become a problem quickly over the past few weeks-I think it started with a growth spurt and my not paying close enough attention to her cues.  My LO sleeps 8-10 hours at night and goes to bed without the breast.  I do feed her right before she goes down-she is sleepy but her eyes are open when I put her down.  She may fuss a little but quickly falls off to sleep.  Does sometimes wake around 3/4 but is able to put herself back to sleep.  During the day it has become a whole different story. She will be going to day care in about a month when I go back to work and she will need to be able to put herself to sleep.  Any thoughts would be helpful.

 :)

Thanks Stacy-

She is in a feed, wake(approx 2 hrs), sleep cycle.  When I see her showing signs of being tired I put her down.  It is in this process that she starts to flip out and the only way she calms down is if I give her the breast, rock or use some other kind of prop.  This all started about a month ago-she couldn't sleep and I thought it was because she must be hungry.  This is when she would eat for a little bit and then get sleepy.  Then I would put her down for a nap now she wants this all the time.  I know that I have created this dependency and don't want it to continue.  I am in the process of reading Tracy's book.  The sh/pat doesn't seem to work so I think that I need to start the pu/pd.  With this method it is my understanding that I continue to pu/pd until she starts to show signs of soothing herself.  When I pick her up I do nothing but reassure her that she will be OK sleeping in her big girl bed and put her right back down-no patting, rocking shush of any sort?

Thanks for the advice.  The sh/pat worked today and baby girl took 2-2hr naps and 1 hour nap.  I will approach tomorrow the same way as today.
