Just found out I can't bf for 48 hours
« on: August 01, 2006, 19:07:50 pm »
Hi, I have to have an MRI next week and b/c they have to inject a contrast dye, I can't bf for 48 hours.  I am really worried that I am going to mess up my supply or ds won't want to go back to bf. I do have a Medela In-style pump so I will have to do that at each feeding.  Since I have to get rid of the milk, will I have to freeze a supply for those days that I am not able to give him the milk?  What is the best time to pump if he is eating every 3.5 hour from one side?

Thanks,
Kim

Sam's waking up (an hour after going to bed :'() Must dash.
Read this - it's not cut and dry:

OK - he did go back to sleep.
I'm not saying it's straightforward but this announcement is apparently quite new. (I got it from this site: http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact/index.html)
Dr Hale is pretty much the world authority on pharmacology/ medications and breastfeeding.

If he is eating every 3.5 hours, but only taking one side, I would pump the opposite side once he has finished his feed.  If you are finding that you are not producing enough milk to fill your little one at the next feed you can always offer him the second side.

Have you researched this topic on Jack Newsom website? I think it's Birthden or something like that, but you could just google it and see....We are in the middle of a move so can't check the book, but I am pretty positive that it's safe. Doctors will just take the easy way out and tell you it's not safe instead of researching it.

Thanks everyone, the tech told me that all the latest research is that the baby does not get any of the dye through bf.  I called my ped and they put me on the phone with a nurse who said you should just play it safe and do it for 48 hours, but it is important to me to keep up the bf.  Plus I have a 2 year old so I can't imagine finding the time.  Anyway, it is true that the docs don't take the time to look into it, it is just easier for them to tell me not to feed and then they are covering their bases.
I did read the info that Samuel's mom gave me the link for and they said the studies showed it was safe.  I guess I will do some research and see what else I can find.
