can you overfeed a 12-week-old?
« on: August 03, 2006, 19:40:07 pm »
Hey there,
I need some help. I have read the FAQ section and where it said that they become more efficient nursers and if they take less time not to worry, but his diapers weren't as wet. So I went from every 3hrs to every 3&1/4 to 3&1/2hrs. He sometimes still doesn't eat a lot and stops at the 5min mark. If I burp him and then almost force him back to eat more. He sometimes cries and arches his back, but if I insist he will sometimes latch back on and drink quite a bit more. His diapers are heavy and wet again, but I am concerned I am overfeeding him and going past his hunger point and therefore creating problems later on with obesity. He is only 12-weeks old, was born 6lbs 14 oz. and now weighs (I weighed him today) 14lbs 6oz. So he is gaining a lot fast 2 lbs in one month on breastmilk only. I just don't want to go past his point of hunger, but if I make him latch back on he eats SO much more. I don't know what to do.

hi
i wondered the same thing at times...my lo is 3 months, but at his 2 month checkup he was 15 lb.5 oz.  a big boy!!  and he was born at 7 lb. 7oz. so he gained quicky as well. my doc told me 'you can't overfeed or underfeed a baby without a fight.'  so i'd say if he's happy and eating great, making wet and dirty diapers with the 3 .5 hour cyle then go with it.  that must be his window to eat.
good luck!
