low iron = poor sleep?
« on: August 03, 2006, 04:15:08 am »
Here's a question for all of you... I was researching possible causes for poor sleep habits in babies, and I've stumbled across a few trails of information that say low iron levels can create sleep disturbances.  Has anybody else heard this, or had experience with it?  I've read about some babies who, after having a blood test showing they were even slightly iron-deficient, started taking supplements (or more fortified foods) and their sleeping started to normalize after even just a week.  I've been taking it easy on fortified cereals, as DS gets terribly constipated with them, but perhaps I should give him more and just mix in lots of prunes, LOL.  Just wondering if anyone knows more about this.

Not sure, but DS also has trouble with cereal/constipation, and BTW is not a good sleeper no matter what I do.  Just FYI-I mix prunes with his cereal every time he eats them, and it still stops him up.... :( poor guy.

Anyway, I will be interested to hear what anyone else has to say on this issue.....
Thanks for posting the subject!

babies are born with sufficient levels of iron to last them until they are 6 months old (with the exception of preterm or low birthweight babies) and then they need extra iron.

There's more info on it here: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron.html
