Need help with weaning
« on: August 08, 2006, 23:23:04 pm »
Our routine looks like this:

6:30-7am--awake anytime here
7:15am--bf
7:45am--6 tbsp cereal, 3-4 tbsp fruit
9am--nap
10:30am-wakes
10:30-11am--bf in here
12:30pm--approx 4 tbsp fruit/veg, 1/2 Farley's biscuit
2pm--nap
3:30pm--wakes, bf
5:30pm-6 tbsp cereal, 3-4 tbsp fruit
7:30pm--bf
8pm--bedtime

Just this last week she has managed to wean herself from df and is sleeping thru the night (knock on wood! ;)).
She doesn't drink from a bottle.  Will drink from a small glass and starting to suck from a 'juicebox' type container.

Should I wait until better established on straw drinking, or pursue the glass drinking?  Which feed to start with?? I am starting a new job at end of month, so having the last feed at 7pm would be convenient for me, but not sure best way to do it.
:-[ (I haven't read any of the books lately....just starting this job, selling our house and preparing to move) :-[

Are you looking to wean her to formula or are you going to pump while at work? Since 7 months is still on teh young side for cow's milk only. Most LO's take a good couple of weeks iwth the sippy cup and if she shows progress with straws...I would work on sippy cup with a straw. There are several on the market.
I never made a transition from BF to formula feeding, but there are several posts on that topic.
For weaning, I recommend slow, slow, slow steps. Drop the shortest, least important feeding first and then several days the next, etc. And eventually after 2-3 weeks, she will be weaned.

Well, I already use formula in her cereal, so would probably wean to that.
So, I guess the shortest one would be....I think either the 2nd or 3rd feed.  So instead of offering breast, offer milk/formula in the sippy cup. If she refuses and fusses, don't give in??  Keep offering cup, right?

If she doesn't take sippy cup right away....I wouldn't push it too far- you don't want her to associate the sippy cup as unpleasant. If she doesn't take right away, nurse to take edge of hunger and then offer cup. Or...beat her to the punch and offer sippy before she's due her next nursing. LO's are sometimes more interested in sippy cups when they are "toys" vs nutrition- so let her play with a sippy of formula.

She's been doing really good the last few days with the straw cup.  I have been offerings at meals..sometimes formula, sometimes diluted juice, sometimes just water.  I think I will pump for the 3:30 feed and offer that today and see how it goes.

Is there a reference for how much milk/formula for each age group to be getting?  How much should I try to get her to drink?
