AHHHH the 20 minute jolt
« on: August 07, 2006, 08:53:24 am »
Ds is now 6 weeks old he has been on easy since around 1 week.  So far the only problem we had with naps was when i was leaving it to late to start the wind down since that has been sorted he has napped really well.  However we have changed nothing and in the last couple of days he still goes off no problem but needs settling after the 20 min jolt.  He goes back down really quickly but wakes again 20 mins later this usually goes on until feed time or sometimes after an hour will fall into deep sleep.  I have read the section in FAQ's and we do the 4 s ritual he is tightly swaddled and like i say he goes back almost immediatly but still goes again after 20 mins.  What do you think i need to do? I thought as he went back to sleep again he would go into a deep sleep but seems to start all over again.  Any advice would be appreciated. Modifying to say : is it possible that i am battling both the 20 min jolt (soothing puts him back) and also the 45 min nap?  Or do you think he is now needing more A time?

I remember it was quite some time before Zander could make it through the 20 minute jolt (post-dummy that is!).  I used to stay with him keeping pressure on his body and hold him down when I felt the jolt to prevent him from waking.  I think you have an older LO though don't you?  Perhaps not very practical!  Could you try having a sheet very tightly over him on top of the swaddle to try and create the same effect?  I would also make sure his room's really dark so that if he does wake he learns that it's still sleep time which might encourage him to go back to sleep by himself.

Thank.  Yes i do have another one which can make life more restrcted but he has gone out for the day with grandparents so I am really working on it today.  Stayed with him for the second nap ( very short awake time due to poor napping first thing)  Not even sure i felt the jolt and ended up staying with him for 45 mins when he started to stir then i left the room and now he has been asleep for nearly 2 hours first time in 3 days.  Will do the same at next nap.  Though as he barely moved at the jolt i wonder if for first nap he wasn't sleepy enough.  won't change anything though until i know the staying has worked a couple of times and if i find first nap is still a problem might try extending a time very first thing.  It's all fun isn't it.

Just been thru 3rd nap of the day woke up completely at the jolt despite me adding pressure.  Just wondering if he wakesup at the jolt and goes back to sleep does he enter deep sleep to finish he cycle or is he starting cycle all over again?    at some night i manage to keep resettling him for upto 2 hours by going in every 20 mins.  Does this count as no nap or a nap?

It's definitely a nap as he's asleep but if he actually wakes up after 20 minutes he probably starts his sleep cycle from the beginning.  It's all sleep though which is far better than no sleep  ;)
