Long AM/short PM nap for 7 month old?
« on: August 06, 2006, 19:37:27 pm »
Just wondering if there's any reason why I shouldn't let LO take a long AM nap and short PM. Up until a couple of days ago, he was doing about 1.5 in AM and 1.5 in PM (we dropped the cat nap completely about a week ago). No matter what, the 2 naps never exceed 3 hours, and sometimes are a little under.

However, the last couple of days he's started doing a 2-2.25 hour AM nap and then a 45 minute PM nap! I personally like the longer nap b/c it lets me work longer. But I'm just wondering if there's any downfalls to this schedule that I don't foresee. His nighttime sleep was fine both days. But will it start getting offtrack if he keeps doing this?

Do you think as long as I don't let the 2 naps exceed 3 hours we'll be OK?

I'd say no reason at all! For a long time my DD did this - long morning nap, shorter afternoon nap. Now we are having to cut the morning nap down as DD has started to refuse her afternoon nap and we may have to go cold turkey to one nap this week. But it worked well for us for a few months. As long as it doesn't affect your DS' night sleep and as long as he still will take an afternoon catnap, I'd say go for it!

I think you just play it by ear - if this suits you then it's great but if it starts to affect his night sleep you can always move things around!  The problem you may get is that he is very tired by bedtime with his short afternoon nap and if he falls into bed exhausted it could start to cause early morning wakings.  You'll also want to try and make sure she keeps an afternoon nap when she switches to one nap so you'll have to extend that one when it gets to that stage.

Before we did the transition to 1 nap that is what my DD was doing. She always preferred a longer AM nap and from about 9months was sleeping 1.5hrs in the AM and 45mins-1hr in the PM and 12hrs overnight.

My first ds did the same thing every day for several months at the same age. The only problem I had with it was that sometimes he was really cranky before bedtime b/c he didn't have enough sleep from the short nap.  And for awhile he would get up at 5am, which I think was a result of being overtired at bedtime.  But eventually it worked itself out.  If it's not broken, don't fix it! ;D
