My daughter has always been a huge nurser, but I thought it would settle down by now.  She has never popped off the breast because she was full.  I've always had to end the feeding when I think she's full.  I'm sure a lot of it is comfort sucking especially since she won't take a paci.  Each day time feed is 20 - 30 min,but she will go as long as I will let her. It takes a solid hour of nursing at  night to get her to go to sleep.  If  I stop earlier, she cries and won't settle with shh/pat.  This happens at night too.  She'll wake at 2am, eat for 40 min, then wake at 5:30am, eat for 45min - 1 hr, then eat again at 7am.  I check to make sure she's swallowing and she is, albeit slowly after 30 min.

Should I let her nurse for so long?   Is this affecting her night wakings?  She was up at 2am, 3:45 and 5:30am last night.  I tried shh/pat at 3:45 for 45 min but then had to feed her for 15 min to get her to sleep.

I try to get her to sleep by 8-8:30pm (can't do earlier because of my toddler).  I've tried a DF at 10am, both breast and bottle, but she's not hungry since she ate from 7:30-8:30.

She's on 3.5 hr EASY and takes good naps during the day.  I try to cluster feed in the evening (5pm, 6:30pm, 7:30pm) to speed up the evening but it doesn't work.

Any suggestions on how to shorten the feeds at night?

I know this isn't going to help you but DS1 always fed for 45 minutes at a time - even at night. 20 minutes at least on each breast. At least I knew he was getting the hind milk and the foremilk. He's 5 now so I can't remember when he started sleeping through though. DS2 is only 9 days old but he takes 20 minutes at least on both sides for what I consider to be a full feed. There is the odd 15 minutes and sometimes the odd 10 minute one, but the latter I consider snacking and it definately doesn't sustain him very long so i try and get him to have more. At least with the full feeds you do get the 3.5 hour gap. DS2 has slept through a couple of times though - but I'm not sure if that is a good thing for all sorts of reasons that are off-topic here.

It will get better!!  Your Dd will become a more efficient nurser sometime in the future.  To tell you the truth, I miss those long nursing sessions where I could watch a movie or just sit and chill.  Sigh...They grow up so fast!!  ((((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))))
Blessed beyond measure.

owelley - when did you LO become a more efficient nurses?  my DD is almost 5.5 months and her feeds are still at least 45 minutes long.

girlmum,

Dd became a more efficient nurser at around 5 mos.  I remember posting about short nursing sessions.

I started giving her solid food just before she turned 6 mos.  I was really convinced that she needed solid food already because of nursing so quickly.  Even tho she nursed so quick, she has the same amount of wet/soiled diapers so I could take comfort in that.  Make sure ur lo is still swallowing and not sleeping there or using you as a pacifier.  I doubt that and IMHO I think ur dd just likes to take her time for now...
Just kick back and chill for those 45 min for now.  I used to have to watch tv just to stay awake while Dd would nurse for over an hour!! :o :o :o

It will get better!! ;)
Blessed beyond measure.

Have you tried giving her a paci???  I have this problem when I return from work - he just won't stop eating.  After he slows down the eating (you said that lo is slowing at around the 30 minute mark), I burp ds, give him a paci and just hold him tight against me.  He misses the suckling time with me during the day and this helps him get his fix without over-eating.  Hope that helps!
