Breastfeeding & EASY for 6 Week Old
« on: August 11, 2006, 03:53:10 am »
My little boy is 6 weeks old and he is my second.  I'm finding it hard to know when my breast is completely empty because this time around they don't seem to get as hard.  He seems to empty one breast, at least what I think is empty, in 8-12 mins and doesn't want the second breast.  I'm concerned that he's not getting enough but he has been putting on weight and the maternal nurse said that as long as he's putting on weight, then 8-12 mins is enough.

He tends to get very sleepy so I've tried changing his nappy and letting him have a no-nappy kick for a while to wake him up and then offer the second breast which he then takes but as soon as I get my let-down he starts crying and pulls off.  I manage to get him back on but he'll only last a couple of minutes before he falls asleep again.

Can this be enough for him?

This routine doesn't seem to fit in EASY but rather it's EAEASY with 2 activity times.  Also, his EA time doesn't last an hour because he doesn't feed for long and then with 1 1/2 nap he's up before 3 hours.

Any advice or suggestions would be dearly appreciated.

Hi, Congrats on your son, he could be an efficient eater and just feed quick. Babies get good at feeding and can be full more in no time.

2nd time round with bf was the same for me as you. My breasts seemed to know what to do because i had previously bf. They say that our body adapts better as it has been through it before, so therefore, you are most likely producing milk as your son needs it. As long as he is gaining weight then i think he is getting enough milk and doing fine.

We were a little EAEAS for some time also, and you just have to remember that it is a routine and can be flexible with it so that it suits your baby. Give it a little more time and i am sure you will see more of and EASY as your son gets older. It is hard to get them to stay awake for "A" time at such a young age isn't it.

Why not check out the birth clubs as this is a great way to chat with other mums of babies the same age as yours.
