Help with nightwakers for a 5 month old.
« on: August 12, 2006, 16:13:52 pm »
We are currently on day 6 of the transition from 3 hour easy to 4 hour easy.  We put him down at 7ish and then he wakes up every 3-3.5 hours needing more than just a little pat.  Is he waking up b/c his body knows that food comes every 3 hours or so?  In a 12 hour period, our lo is waking probably 8-10 times a night and I really need help.  Sometimes he is resting for 2 hours at a time.  Not crying, just not in a deep sleep.  Help me please.

How old is your child? 5 months
What’s his/her daily routine? day 6 of transition from 3-4 easy
What’s nap routine?see above
How long are naps?see above
What's bedtime routine? Time? feed at 7:15 and down at 7:30ish
Do you bottle or breastfed?? breastfeed
How much? or how long? every 3:15 hours as of today
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) both sucked dry.
How many wakes per night? too many to count.
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up?  sometimes only up for a little hushing and other times up for more than an hour.  Sometimes crying sometimes just not in a deep sleep.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry?  Trying not to go to him until a cry for help.
What have you tried to settle?? shush/pat, just hand on body
What do you do for A time and how long is it? see day 6
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? maybe a little teething and rollingover some.
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) Trying cereal 2x/day.  1T in the morning and 2T at night.
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? No prop anymore unless I am doing something wrong.
Do they have a lovie? NOt an obvious one.

Sorry to hear you're having some troubles!  :(  You're doing well to not go in unless it's a real cry. I know it's soooo annoying but it will really pay off in the end when your LO sleeps through regularly and can put himself back to sleep no problem. So keep at that!!

My main suggestion to you is that if you must to two cereal feedings a day, to do the second in the afternoon rather than dinnertime. It can cause gas and cramping/upset, and that can really contribute to nightwakings. Doing it earlier on in the day will give him a chance to work that out before bedtime. Also, it can be hard to tell sometimes if the developmental stuff is contributing, but just in case make sure that you're giving him plenty of time during the day to practice rolling so if that's what's going on at night he will hopefully get it out of his system during the day. HTH!
