argh - it's all gone wrong!
« on: August 16, 2006, 00:21:31 am »
Hi,
My problem is that 14 week old DS has started to refuse the dream feed. He's on 3 1/2 hour EASY, starting at 7 am, and therefore his last feed is at 5.30, and then he's topped off at 7 before bed. AT 8 weeks old he started sleeping through, taking a 5 oz (EBM) dream feed at 10.30 he'd sleep until 6.30.
However! After he turned 12 weeks this all seemed to go a bit pear shaped. He started taking less and less at the dream feed, and then waking earlier and earlier. I could almost always get him back down again after the feed, but you see the problem - he was starving at 5 am, took a full feed, and then wasn't remotely interested in eating when I got him up at 7.
Last night he took 1 oz at the dream feed (grrr - I worked really hard to pump 5) and then, of course, woke up at 3 starving. Fed him, went back to sleep. Got him up at 7 and he really wasn't interested.
That middle of the night feed seems to have become his main meal of the day. i feel like at all his daytime feeds I'm just topping him off. And there's no way I can get him to go back to sleep without feeding him, he'd scream the house down. He's obviously really hungry, empties all of one boob and part of another - my guess is he's taking around 7 oz!
Any suggestions? SHould I try to feed him a bit less when he wakes in the night, just enough to get him back to sleep so that he'll be hungry at 7 am? I'm not sure this is possible because getting him off my breast when he's on is extremely difficult, but I guess for a start I could stop offering the second breast? Please help!

hi,

IMHO... sounds like you hit the 12-week growth spurt, and haven't totally adjusted yet.  i wonder if he was eating a ton at night to help increase your supply.  looks like he did - just at the wrong time!   ;)

might not be a bad idea to either let him feed a bit longer, or slightly more often for a little while.  dunno about the 2nd breast; didn't do that.

maybe post in the breastfeeding forum??

 :)
