Trouble settling for naps
« on: August 23, 2006, 09:48:54 am »
My little girl has always had problems with day naps, but it seems to be getting worse and not better.

Keira is 12 weeks old, but was 4 weeks premature. I've been trying to sleep train her for the entire time and it just doesn't seem to be working. Her days naps just keep getting shorter and it's getting to the point where the only way I can get her to nap is to nurse her. She's so tired and grumpy and getting so over-stimulated that it can take a couple of hours of nursing to get her to sleep at night.

Nights are good. She'll usually get to sleep around 9 and sleep until 4am when she's ready for a feed and then settles to sleep easily.

She wakes around 7 to 7.30 and is on a 3 hour easy. The days are getting so bad that she cries as soon as I put her down anywhere. When I do manage to get her to go down she wakes soon after I leave and screams until I get her up.

I do my best to keep her A time to 1 hour but once she wakes it's taking a few hours to get her to nap and then it's only 20 minutes.

I don't know what to do. She seems miserable and I hate seeing her like this. I'm exhausted, I can't even manage to get a decent meal myself during the day because she just wants to be cuddled.

Can anyone help?

At 12 weeks she may need a bit more than an hour of A time - have you tried 1.25 hours? Perhaps you can try bringing her into her dimmed room at an hour awake and spend some time in there changing her diaper and cuddling/singing a lullaby and then get her into her crib drowsy but awake? Do you dim her room? Use white noise?

Hi Karen,

Thank You for your reply. I will try extending her A times for her other naps today. I've just put her down for her first nap, it's just over one hour now after sleeping through the night (10pm until 6.40am - good night sleep is my sanity saver right now!).

If anyone else has anything to offer I'd be really thankful!

I agree with Karen about the extended A times.

Also, what's your wind-down routine? Check out this link for some pointers https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64277.0

HTH :)
