first nap
« on: August 24, 2006, 08:00:46 am »
DS has started to wake early (6am ish) often after just 10 hours sleep.  :( Prior to that he was sleeping 11-12 hours at night. Of course, because he's had less sleep, he gets whiney after about 2 hours.

Should I put him down for an earlier nap? His usual A time is about 3.5-4 hours or do I try to keep it as long as possible?

Are these early wakes a common phase? DS is 9 months. Any solutions?

This was yesterdays routine
5.45 am wake
8.15-9.15 nap
12.45 pm (took 30 mins to get him to sleep-overtired?)
1.15-2pm woke crying after 40 min nap so did 1.5 hours of PU/PD!  :o
3.30-4.15 nap
7.30 bed asleep 7.40
woke 5.45 (after 10 hours sleep) played till 6.30

It certainly seems to be common at around this age!  I've read that it can be related to going to bed exhausted so that they have their deep sleep at the start of the night and then wake early in the morning ready to go so try putting him down 15-30 minutes earlier than usual and see if this helps him to drift off to sleep slower.  If Zander wakes early I try to stick as close to his normal naptime as I can, I would keep his first A time as long as possible without letting him get overtired.

Totally agree with Kelly here - I'd try to get as close to normal naptime as possible - maybe just compromising a bit and putting him down 15-20 minutes earlier so he doesn't get too overtired - otherwise if you keep putting him down too early you may reinforce the early wakings.
