How much food should I be taking?
« on: August 27, 2006, 10:49:32 am »
I am flying in about 5 weeks to time from Europe to Australia by myself with my DD who is 4 and Ds who will be 9.5months.
If I can I would really like not to be carrying more than I need.

This is my flight times:
1st October CDG-SIN 12.25pm-7.00am
2nd October SIN-BNE 9.55am-7.30pm

I am looking into it now as would like to get DS into some different jar food before the flights.

Looking at the flight times I am thinking need to have food for two days?
Has anyone tried having cereal in a bottle with milk?
In Spain that is what they give them for there breakfast,I don't do it,but was thinking might be easier on the flight, one less food to carry and less mess to.

When I flew with DD 4 years ago she was 10months and I carried way too much stuff so would like to plan ahead this time.

Any suggestions or ideas you have would be great?

Thank you
Andrea...

Andrea does he eat weetabix or any type of cereal with milk?

What I did for my 3hr flight to Spain, we write down his typlical routine (you should do this for 2 days) and note down what he normally eats - I took enough for each meal + enough oz of milk in ready meade cartons to cover the flights.

If you think there will be a problem feeding him certain types of food on the plane then you can try finger food - will he let you feed him finger food? (In your other post you say he still drops it) but if he lets you feed him, then sandwiches, breadsticks, blocks of cheese, veggies and fruit, etc may be a good idea.  The cabin crew can heat up food, but it takes ages because thy can only do it on a jug of hot water, so if you intend to get them to heat stuff up for you, ask for it well in advance.

I gave Calum weetabix for his breakfast on the plane, I took the dry weetabix in a container then filled it with the relevant amount of milk - followed by chopped fruit, which DH and I fed to him.  Are you able to take ready made cartons of milk rather than have the hassle of having to make up formula?

Do you always give him jarred food or are you only doing it for the plane journey?

definitely recommend the weetbix as breakfast as you can pack a big ziplock bag with the amount of "bars" of 'bix that you need for the trip and the flight crew can even give you milk to make it up (if you are using cow's milk for foods) and can do for more than just breakfast as it + fruit is such a nutritious and easy meal

here you can also get jars of baby porridge/oatmeal that alex always liked when we traveled (+ jar fruit so it is easy)

i woudl just get small sized jars that you know will be eaten and serve them straight from the jar at mealtimes so no heating required (i think/found any veggie ones and fruits are fine without heating as long as they have not been in the fridge)

for the initial leg of the journey you coudl bring more fresh foods

i know it is a pain but i have always traveled with extra foods and left out other stuff if bags get too much. just in case... the worst case scenarios of delays or getting stick in singapore for an extra meal or 2 unless lo is up for some noodles or such  ;)

He has normal baby cereal, but I will try him on weet-bix will be easier to travel with that.

We have smaller cans of formula here,so that isn't a problem to carry either.

I think I might be better laying of finger food,it could be a long and messy trip if he hasn't mastered it 100%.He is already crawling and standing and walks around holding onto the lounge with one hand,so that alone will make the trip long, without adding anything else.

That was what I was looking at the flight times aren't to bad and on the 2nd part of the leg i might be able to get him onto aus time a bit.We normally have home made food, but we will have 4 days of needing jar food,as we leave home on the 1st and get into our home town on the 4th.

If I try to hang of on finger foods he will 10months,is that ok?

I just want to try and make the flight as easy as possible for me,been am doing it alone with both kids.

Thank you both Lauren and deb for your input...
