BM babies stop drinking on breast, but continue on bottle?!
« on: September 03, 2006, 19:03:04 pm »
My 17 week old twin boys have been exclusively BF until just today. I have been having trouble pumping the extra milk needed for the DF, so I introduced formula today. As usual, both boys drank for about 5 minutes and refused any more off the breast. I then proceeded to give the bottle to see if they would like the taste of formula. Not only did they like it, but each drank 1.5 oz!! That is a lot, considering they refused to take more off the breast. Anyone else experience this? Is it easier to nurse off a bottle and that's why they took to the formula? Does this mean they previously have not been getting enough off the boob?

Wow are your LOs cute! :)

Basically, the answer to your question is YES.  It is easier for LOs to get milk from a bottle than the breast so they will generally suck down more from a bottle even if they have pulled off of the breast.  As long as they are having enough wet/poopy diapers and are gaining weight well (make sure you check the newer charts for BF babies and don't rely solely on the older ones for formula fed babies) I wouldn't worry about them getting enough milk.

Yup, as said previously, drinking from a bottle is a completely different ball game requiring much less effort and a whole different technique. Unless you are using a haberman feeder or variflow bottle it's actually difficult not to drink. It doesn't mean they've been getting insufficient amount from the breast at all.

Oh, so I don't necessarily have to supplement my feedings with EBM or formula? In a way, I hoped that was the case, thinking maybe I would be able to get more into them during the day and they would stop waking so much at night! Actually, Matt had quite a bit of spit up after the feeding, so I assumed he had taken in too much anyway.

Thanks so much for the feedback.
