10 month old and choking
« on: October 12, 2006, 16:43:54 pm »
Hi. I have been feeding my 10 month old toast, english muffins,  etc. for about 2 months with no problems. He would occasionally gag at first, but not to the point that I was ever concerned. But I recently saw his dr. and he gave me a really hard time about feeding him stuff like that. He said that at that age he really should be eating just purees, and that solid foods are a choking hazard ( I should mention that he's a family dr., not a ped.) Forget about eating only purees...my ds won't eat any purees at all and hasn't for a while, so we try to make sure he gets a balanced diet through finger foods. We do cut up the fruits, veggies and cheese into bite size pieces, but give him taost just cut into quarters. I thought it was normal for most babies this age. Was I wrong?

Most LO's are on moslty purees at this age. FInger foods are just started at 8-10 months for most, but some like my DD deside they like the finger foods better. If he's been ok with it so far I wouldn't worry, as long as you are watching him while he eats and your carefull about what you give him then he should be fine. Try getting the purees and cereals into him when you can to balence it out.

My LO is 7 1/2 months and my health visitor said she should be having finer food e.g toast carrots. But she will only eat puree's!

Totally agree with Kimberly as long as he is getting a balanced diet and is supervised with finger food then that is fine.

my DD has been on finger foods since she was about 8 months I think.

She occasionally has some which make her choke, but usually because she is too busy trying to talk to the dog or cats, or has stopped concentrating on eating.

She will eat bits of fruit, toast fingers, mini sandwiches etc.. if your baby is happy eating finger foods then go ahead. SOME babies may not be ok with finger foods at this stage, some will refuse to eat purees. my DD is one of those - she likes to have lumps to chew and will spit out anything that doesn't require chewing. let your baby guide you.

the important thing is your baby is growing well and is fit and happy.

I am shocked you were told that.  we strated finger food at 7 months and she could eat anything at all by 10 months and that was a good thing.  as long as your there and watching then there isn't an issue and if a child wants to eat finger food then that's the first sign they're ready.  try and ignore the "advice"
