How much is too little?
« on: September 14, 2006, 12:29:27 pm »
Hi,

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with my worries. I have recently returned to work and I have moved from breastfeeding 6 times a day (6, 10, 1, 4, 7, 10) to breastfeeding at 6, 5, 7, and 10 and expressing at 1 at work.) My lo is now having feeds at 6, 7 (rice cearel) 10, 2, 5 and 7. I need to drop the five o'clock feed as my lo doesn't want it and generally has a little suck and pops off. (I experimented today and just gave him some rice cereal and apple at 5 and then fed him at 7 and that seemed to work well). I'm really worried that if I'm only giving 4 feeds a day (7, 1 EBM, 7, 10) that it is going to interfer with my supply. I love breastfeeding, and I don't want to stop! Should I keep up with the little snack feed at five or give it a go with dropping it and giving him the cereal and seeing how the milk situation goes?  ??? - By the way, he is 8.2kg, a big boy.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

I think if he was just doing a little suck anyway it's not like a massive boost to your supply so you probably won't notice a big change.

If you are really concerned about your supply you could always pump a bit extra later in the day but  I think with 4 feeds/pumps a day you shouldn't find your supply suffers.

How much ebm does he take while you are at work?

Thanks for replying!

He has two feeds while I'm at work. Around 240ml (5oz) at 10 and 2pm. Genereally the 10 am feed is EBM from the previous day with maybe 1 oz of formula to top it up. The 2pm feed is usually half frozen EBM and half formula.
