Accidental Parenting with Self Soothing
« on: September 26, 2006, 05:49:23 am »
Hi,

My DS2 is 12 weeks old and wakes after 45mins from every nap.  I don't have time enough away from DS1 to help LO go back to sleep and he's refusing the dummy, so unless he cries for Mum, I leave him to stir and sometimes grizzle and 9 times out of 10 he goes back to sleep.  It takes him 15-20mins though.

Am I on the road to accidental parenting because I'm not helping him go back to sleep?  Will he never get past the 45mins nap without my help?  Does he think I've left him?

Feeling guilty for not helping him like I helped DS1!

if he is stirring & grizzling but not actively crying for you, you don't need to go into him.  what you are describing sounds like a mantra cry, and it means he's on the way to self-soothing.  15-20 minutes of chatting is pretty normal, and if he goes back to sleep, even better for you!   ;)

on that note...

DS2 sleeps through the night and I've just introduced the dream feed.  He habitually wakes around 4.00am but I don't feed him and he goes back to sleep until around 5.30am at which point I get him up but don't feed him until around 6.30am and he's happy with that.  Any thoughts?

again, if he is just chatting, i would leave him to it.  if he is not insisting on getting up at 5:30 i would also let him go.  this is why it's so good that you can tell the difference between his cries.

there are some more ideas for daytime here:
