Eating after illness
« on: September 30, 2006, 11:39:07 am »
Hi

Zander had a tummy bug last week and obviously went right off his food.  Once he did start eating we stuck to a very bland diet for a few days (things like toast, fish, scrambled egg).  He seems fully recovered now but still gets extremely upset at meal times if I try to give him any of his 'old' food.  Today I tried chicken and butternut squash pie pureed on toast, frozen mixed veg (which he usually loves), little pieces of pasta followed by some yogurt mixed with fruit puree.  He ate such a small amount and got so upset that I was trying to feed him (or let him feed himself!) this food and he ended up having a full 8oz of milk before his nap because I know that if he doesn't eat enough he won't sleep well and then he'll be tired on top of everything else!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to make his mealtimes enjoyable again?  I know I could give him fish fingers or scrambled egg and he would eat it but I don't want to get into a bad habit and want to keep offering the healthy meals my freezer is crammed with but can't bear to see him so upset.  Do I just keep offering and try to be laid back (and give him a milk drink before his nap!) if he's not interested?  I'm going to disguise his dinner in an omelette tonight as he's been happy to eat eggs these past few days, see how that goes down!

When that happens with Ewan we have to take it really slow to get him back to eating all the things he was eating.  I would offer the bland things along with some of the old items so he has a choice.
