Is it quick in the first few days?
« on: September 29, 2006, 11:59:30 am »
Hi ladies!
This is my 3rd child, but I can't remember how it was with the other 2!  It seems that my new little one nurses pretty vigorously for about 5-10 minutes (sometimes longer) per side and then pulls off like she's done.  She's having plenty of dirty and wet diapers (I'm still at the hospital...she's only 1 day old).  I know there's not much colostrum for them to get until my milk comes in...just wanted reassurance that a quicker feed in the beginning is normal!?

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your new lo and I have to say that I'm amazed at how organised you are. Does your hospital have a lc to do rounds. I am presuming everything is okay if her output is good and she's not receiving any supplements. Congrats again!

I too am impressed!!!
My LLL breastfeeding answer book (at 600+ pages) says pre-mature milk babies often fall into two patterns. Feeding virtually continuously for several hours or "Frequent breastfeeding for ten minutes at a feeding...around the clock" (P.26)
(P.27) "Not feeling full encourages the baby to nurse frequently, which assures that the baby gets the colostrum he needs. Frequent nursing helps to establish a good milk supply early on, as well as providing a variety of health benefits"

It all sounds good. You can't judge by wet nappies at this stage too much as quantities are so small but by around day 3-4 you should start to see a transition to greenish, lighter transitional poo. By 5th day like breastfed baby poo.

Thanks ladies!  I spoke with the LC this morning and she said it is normal since she's still so young...she said if I hadn't seen a wet diaper in 24 hrs, I could always supplement a little formula if I wanted, but she's had 2 dirty diapers within 4 hours, so she felt like everything was going well...by day 2, she said she should have 2 wet diapers a day.  My milk will hopefully be in by tomorrow, so that will help.   :)
