naps have changed - and not for the better
« on: October 11, 2006, 22:37:04 pm »
I've been requesting help wih night wakings and now it seems we are having trouble with naps.  The past 2 days have been terrible.  Up to this point, DS (10 weeks old) has been a great napper.  Sometimes he would only take a 45er, but most were 1-2 hrs.  He would nap 3-4 times/day, total awake time between naps never exceeded 2 hours.  We always swaddle and use a paci at sleep times.  After winddown I could put him in his crib, pat shh for maybe a minute and he'd be sleeping.

Now...  in the past 48 hours, he has taken one hourlong nap.  The rest have lasted between 10 and 30 minutes.  He is crying when I swaddle him and when I rock him.  He won't always take the paci and when he does he spits it back out when he starts crying.  The only thing that eventually settles him is freeing his arms from the swaddle, which is what I'm assuming is probably waking him after just 10 or 20 minutes.

At night he's waking at 3:30 or later and staying awake for long periods of time.

He doesn't appear to be ill or in pain.  His cry is a "tired" cry.

Help!!

I generally don't rock to sleep - just part of the wind down. Wind down consists of going to DS's room, lowering the lights a bit, reading a story and rocking.  Up until these issues, his eyes would be heavy when I'd lay him down, but he would definitely be awake.  After a minute or 2 of sh/pat, he would be sleeping or close to it and I could leave the room and not hear a peep.

He has his two month shots one week ago, which threw him off for a few days.  I honestly think he might be cutting teeth, but it seems too soon!  He's showing many teething symptoms.

I don't know what to do about the swaddle.  He really flips out when I put his arms to his sides.  We have a miracle blanket so he can't usually get his arms out and yesterday I thought his top was going to blow.  It was as if he is in pain!  But I know he's not.  As soon as I let his arms free he was fine.  I'll try to put one arm in and see how it goes.  Seriously, it was like one day a switch was flipped because he thrived with the swaddle before.  Overall he's been a wonderful sleeper since birth.

A general routine for his is a 3-3.5 hour EAS/EASA.   He eats around 7/7:30am to start the day and goes to sleep for the night between 7-8pm.  At night I do an 11pm-ish DF.  Up until the past week he would wake 1-2 times, around 3:30am and then occasionally a bit later also. But he would go back to sleep within 10-15 minutes with the pacifier and a little sh/pat.  The past week he has been waking more frequently and wanting to socialize rather than go back to sleep.

Thanks so much for your feedback.  It's so helpful to have someone listen and offer suggestions.
