need help with DF and nights with 9wk old
« on: November 04, 2006, 09:57:08 am »
Hi,
I have a 9wk old boy who is still waking at about 2-3am ish even after the DF. He has been having it now since he was about 3-4wks old. He used to have 2 feeds a night and has since dropped it down to 1 since starting the DF, but he dropped the 4.30-5.30am feed and kept the 2am ish feed! I really am wondering how I got my other son to sleep through the night with the DF as he is nearly 2 and a half and I cant remember what I did. Here is the 9wk olds day-
(these are all approx times)
7am-wake and feed (120mls)
8.15am nap sleep at about 8.30am
9.30am wake
10am feed (120-180mls)
11.15am nap sleep about 11.30-11.40am
12.40pm wake
1pm feed (120mls)
2.15pm nap
3.30wake
4pm feed (120mls)
5.15pm nap
6pm wake and feed (120mls)
6.30pm bath
7pm bed fusses til about 7.30pm
8ish wakes for a feed (120mls)
10-10.30pm DF (120mls)
2-3.30am wake and feed (120-180mls) thats him til morning

what am I doing wrong. He goes to sleep on his own and is a really happy baby (Angel baby). I think I need to put more in his bottles as he will empty each bottle I give him...any help would be great.
Thanks, Vanessa xx

Hi Vanessa,

If he is finishing all his bottles, I would put an extra oz in each bottle to give him the opportunity to take more if he wants it.

At this age 1 night waking is still quite common for a lo.  However, have you thought about trying to clusterfeed to enable him to tank up a bit more - this may help and also eliminate the 8ish feed.

You could do your first cluster feed just after the cat nap, then have a bath, then feed again after the bath and then do your wind down routine before bed, and aim for him to be asleep by 7:30.

You can still do the dreamfeed at 10, and this will help him tank up even more.

Vanessa

Your 9wk routine looks amazing!! I wish I had a routine like yours whrn DS was 9weeks.

As Paula says Clusterfeeding may be the way to go, it would also mean that you wouldn't be feeding again so soon after you had put him to sleep for the night.

I would suggest;

........
4pm feed (120mls)
5.15pm nap
6pm wake and feed (120mls)
6.30pm bath, then offer a top up of milk before you put him down to bed. It may be that he is 'fussy' because he is still hungry.
7pm bed fusses til about 7.30pm
10-10.30pm DF (120mls)
2-3.30am wake and feed (120-180mls) thats him til morning

If you give a top up after the bath then it will help to eliminate the 8pm feed, then give the DF as close to 10pm as possible.

Let us know how you get on.
