cow's Milk at 10 months old?
« on: November 03, 2006, 20:21:36 pm »
Hi
I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I am still breastfeeding my 10 month old 3 times a day. The doctor told me I can wean him now and give him cow milk instead of formula.
I have been trying to introduce 1 oz at lunch time  and so far it goes good but I have notice a little bit of constipation. Is this normal ? Should I give him more? He has always been breastfed so I don't have any idea how much milk does a 10 month old needs to drink =(
Please help!!
Thanks
Ruchi

I would put a call into the doctor and ask about the constipation and how much milk they recommend giving at this age.

Sorry that's not much help

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

My DD went through the weening at 10 months also (she did it on her own advice though :(). In one of my posts on the solids board it was suggested to me between 16-24 oz per day. Normally I try to mix her morning cereal with 4 oz of milk, she gets a sippy through out the day of about 6 oz at snack & lunch time then she takes 8 oz at bedtime. I also have a sippy of water around when she's playing, you might want to consider that to help with the constipation.

Cows milk protiens can be difficult for some people to digest, (was for my boys - consitpation in one & vomiting in the other) so honestly in my opinion if it is causing problems I'd hold off & offer more other dairy & plenty of water... yogurt & cheese are just as good if not better than cows milk.... my ds#2 has only just started drinking milk at 17mo, before that all his calcium came from bf, yogurt, cheese & green leafy veg... my Nurse said even if I stopped bf & he didn't drink milk that was fine as long as he got the fluid & calcium from other sources.

DD is one year old and abut a month ago I introduced her to whole Goat milk.  It is supposed to be much more tolerable in general and she has not had any problems.  I LOVE the taste of it - I know it is a little different but in other parts of the world it is much more widely used.
