Desperate mommy trying to fight with 15 min naps
« on: November 15, 2006, 14:13:22 pm »
SO here we go again. Shush pat stopped working good for us and also he stopped napping. From last week on he is taking tops 30 min naps, usual 15 and I am at loss. He needs sleep so bad , but just wont.
He is 7 month old and our current routine or what we are tryoing for is.

E, when he wakes, anywhere between 6 or 7.30, solids about 8
A
S depends when he wakes about 8.30 -10, he goes to sleep and used to take about 45 min nap, last days about 10 or 30 min.
E 11BF, solids about 12
A
S about 2.5 hours from last wake up, sleeps about 30.
E 3
A
S ideally to sleep about 4
E solids about 5
A
Bath about 6 ot 6.30 or 7
E about 7 BF
and then bed.

I am just confused, we do winddown, I put him in bed and he is quiat for about 1 min and then starts to scream. Then at different times different things do it, sometimes  it is enough when I touch his head, but usually it is soemm kind of shushing and holding hand on his back what makes him stop screaming and go to sleep for 15 min. Ia m just at loss, what do I do wrong?

Sorry you're having trouble.  I can't offer much except two things I remember from the books.

One: the shh/pat really is best/meant for 3 months and younger as it is supposed to be a distraction as 3 month or younger babies cannot focus on more than two things at time.  That said, I pat my LO a lot for comfort not for distraction so whatever works as long as it doesn't become a prop, I guess.

Two: It takes babies 20 minutes to fall asleep really so whatever you are doing, do it for that long at least-some babies need more.

Otherwise, I don't know much about babies that old, but somebody else will.  Good Luck!!

I wonder if it is time to drop the third nap and extend A time a bit?  Also, I wonder if controlling the wake up time a bit more (say always wake him up at 6:30) might stabalize his routine a bit and help him get in a better rhthym of the same things happening at the same time.

Could something else be happening--teething, learning to crawl, etc.?

Thanks
He is starting pretty steady wakeup himself. 6 A.M. So we start day from then now.
He is not crawling yet, but trying, maybe this is one reason why he is so restless. And bing 7 month now, he still has no teeth.
I will try to extend his A time , keepingit about 3 hours , maybe this helps.

I have read it too that S/P are not meant to older, but dont know what else to try as he is really upset in bed if I dont touch him at all.  :'(

Similar here with my 7mo LO. Sh/pat only works for babies under 6 mo. After 6mo, sh/pat only disturb them from falling asleep. I have to use a prop for her nap :P Strictly nap time only.... because I noticed if I use prop for her bedtime... she couldn't settle herself when she wakes up in the night.  >:(
I also keep my A time around 2.5-3hrs + keeping catnap as a freebie.

But what is this prop? Really needing ideas here. Today again he has been sleeping for 15 min only, but luckily happily playing yet

My LO loves her water bottle :o It's a little bit like feed to sleep for her nap (sigh). You can introduce other props as well. I have tried once using PU/PD for her nap.... totally chaos, extremely tired + short nap.
My LO knows how to settle herself to sleep.... so using a prop for nap seems OK. If my LO starts waking up for water bottle in the night, then I''ll wean it. For now, we are all happy.
