How many ounces at 6.5 months old?
« on: December 08, 2006, 15:14:49 pm »
Is 24 ounces ok or is that too little?  My son is dropping a bottle but yet isn't hungry for a third solids feed so I am confused on what to do.  This is our day.

8:00 6 oz. bottle
9:30 1/4 cup oatmeal (mix 2 oz. formula with stage 2 fruit)
10-11 nap

12:00 8 oz. bottle
1:00 solids refused
1:15-5:00 nap (sometimes he sleeps until 5:00 though should I wake him at 4:00 to put in more food?)

5:00 1/4 cup cereal & veggie
7:30 8 oz. bottle
8:00 bedtime

Wow! This kiddo sleeps a lot in one nap, almost 4H !!! Does he also sleep 12 H during the night?
At his age, Andrew was sleeping 2H in AM, 2H in PM, and 12H at night time.

It seems to me that there isn't much time available, in the morning & afternoon you're trying to feed him 4 times within 5 hours, and in the evening, only twice within 6H, about the same amount of time...

I would work on extending the A time (only by 15 min every 3-4 days) after his morning nap, moving solids at 11:30 and bottle at 1PM, and wake him up at 4PM ...You might have the surprise that he will sleep a bit longer in Am and even out his day, by adding to that Am we were talking about, from his LOOONG PM nap, so you can offer dinner at about same times (I'd personalyy move this one earlier, 4 or 4:30 PM), and being able to implement LUNCH...

Now, as far as his milk intake is concerned, I'd say that it sounds about right for the amount of solids he eats, but you know him best...Some kids eat more, some less....As long as he doesn't wake up for a feed at night time, he must have enough!!!

Good Luck,
Alina

Alina would you be able to literally post the schedule of what your saying?  I am confused!

Lately he's been on/off sleeping from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.!!!!  But when I cut his nap, he's STILL doing it so I figured I'd let him sleep.  But maybe if I do it consecutively he'll get the idea.

Like tell me the times, how much solids and ounces and when to nap, etc.  The importnat thing for me is that he takes his p.m. nap no later than 2 p.m. as his older sister naps at 1:00 and I like getting at least 1 hour to myself!

Hey there,

I moved your post over here to bottle feeding, hope you don't mind. I thought you would get more responses here to help you.

Here is some useful info about scheduling solids and bottles that I thought you might find useful as a guide https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=68458.0.

So at 6.5 months he shouldn't be on 3 bottles a day? He just doesn't seem hungry to get 4 though!  HELP

I nursed my baby, sorry I can't be of more help regards # of bottles. If your lo is healthy and thriving, I am sure everything is fine. Looks like you have a great sleeper on your hands! You can always mix more milk in with the cereal and veggies etc if you want to slip in a few more ounces.

Hi, I found Andrew's sched in the EASY Routines, I posted this one when he was 6.5 mos, same as Joey. It gives you a better idea about what we were doing, and his night sleep was fine, waking just 0.5H earlier then he used to before we cut the catnap, but now at 7.5 mos he sleeps 7-7 again.

6:30AM Awake
6:30-7AM crib play

E 7AM 6oz formula
A Exerciser, independent play
E 8:15AM Breakfast (3T cereal)
A Playpen, independent play
  Song & Prayer before bed
S 9:15 2H Nap
Y

E 11:30AM 6oz formula
A Jolly Jumper
   Exerciser, independent play
OR we go out 12-1PM  HERE we stretched to lunch so we can go out/ He won't take lunch right after bottle
E 1:15PM Lunch (3T veggie, 2T fruit)
A Playpen, independent play
Book w mommy & swing before bed time
S 2PM 2H Nap
Y

E 4:00PM 6oz formula
A Exerciser
E 5:15 Dinner (2T veggie, 1T fruit, dinner with us)
A Jolly Jumper 15 min, while we clean up
   Bath 6-6:20PM
E  Bed Time Bottle 6oz formula
S 7PM bed

Now at 7.5 we dropped a bottle, and his sched is the one I was writting you about, when you were thinking of dropping the 4th bottle:

7:15AM 6 oz bottle
8:15 breakfast
10-12 nap

12:15PM Lunch
2:30 PM 6oz bottle
3-4:30 nap

4:45 Dinner
6:45PM 8oz bottle
7 in bed, he usually falls asleep in about 10 min

I hope this helps you, good luck!!!...He's great, he knows best how much milk he needs, and you do not worry, they are so smart...

P.S. As you can see my Andrew was drinking about 24 oz at Joey's age, and now he is down to 20 oz, but he eats more solids. He's been sleeping through the night since he was 2 mos old...since then we had only one night waking, when he got his first tooth...he has now 6 teeth, and we've always been OK...he's such an Angel...and it's all thanks to Tracy....  :) :)

I have an idea, just keep up what you're doing, but at 12pm offer solids first and bottle at 1pm, see if there is any decrement in milk, and if he goes for solids...give it a try! If he still gets 24 oz a day, plus 3 meals of solids it might be enough for him!!! Some kids are a bit smaller, they don't need as much food as the bigger babies. Keep smiling, and try different things, you'll find out how your little man likes his food ;)

Love,
Alina

Thanks!  I think I'm going to give that a shot.  With his sister it worked.  Today I fed him dinner at 5:30.  He hadn't eaten since his 12:30 bottle.  He refused it!  I then gave him pears to see if he just didn't like squash (and I knew he must be hungry) and sure enoguh he ate the pears!  I think he just doesn't like food!!!!!!  I never had these problems iwth his sister so I am clueless on what to do.

He's 20 lbs at 6 months so not that tiny!
