One nap question
« on: December 11, 2006, 18:06:07 pm »
Caeden has been on one nap for well over a month now. He is 18 months old.

My problem is getting him to nap longer then an hour. He is tired and grumpy when he wakes which makes me think the one hour isn't enough - I know it isn't for me! Right now he is sleeping a consistent 12 hours 7-7 roughly at night and napping at 12. Ideally - 12-2 and maybe moving to 1-3 as he gets a bit older.
He goes down great - usually almost asleep by the time I finish reading his bedtime book and never cries when I put him down. BUT - then he wakes an hour later and will not resettle.

I have tried WTS but it doesn't seem to work. Though I haven't tried it for a few weeks. Walk-in/walk-out just makes him more upset.

What I am doing now is going in after about 30 minutes and putting his cup and some books in the crib and when he wakes leaving him alone till the 2 hours is up. He has fallen back to sleep a couple times I think and other times he fusses most of the time and occassionally he will play quietly. I do tell him when I put him down "if he wakes before naptime is over, play quietly and mama will come get you when naptime is over". Not sure if he actually understands, but I figure I am at least telling him what we are doing and what to expect.

I am 7 month pregnant and could really use a nap while he naps but when he wakes after an hour it just frustrates me as my body doesn't do well on a short nap so I have kinda given that up and just lay with my feet up and rest or read.

Is there anything I can do to try and get these naps longer? I have been trying so hard to be home for naps consistently so he is napping in his bed and not the car. We live a good distance from town so days we run errands it is hard to either get home before he is falling asleep in the car or we wait till after 2 and just go out then.

Help - any suggestions or thoughts are welcomed!

When Riley first transitioned, sometimes he would wake at that hour mark as well, but a little pat would get him back down for another hour or so. If he is getting 13 hours total, it mat be enough sleep, just not at the right times. I know a lot of children just do around 11 at night, but I wouldn't suggest you mess with his bedtimes. It does take some lo's a while to adjust to the one nap.
