Single-side feeds or both breasts at each feed?
« on: December 11, 2006, 20:42:43 pm »
My 9 week old (until today) has been feeding from both breasts at each feed.  Is this abnormal?  Ironically last night went 8 hours between feeds and this morning has been single side feeding only (must be getting enough).  Unfortunately did not get 8 hours sleep as was upset and crying at 2:30 am with gas and needed to be soothed and get Ovol drops.

Congratulations on the new baby!

Nursing from both breasts is normal, so is single-side nursing. And so is combination of both (which is what my daughter does now). Growth spurts always change things, so perhaps that's what was going on.

When we had colic, Gripe Water (alcohol-free) and Boiron Colic Remedy (homeopathic) were helpful. But really the best thing was my sling - talk about a life-saver!

All the best,
Mellissa

Totally normal.  Just watch for the cues that he's getting enough... 6 wet diapers in 24 hours, an occasional dirty one (may not be every day), weight gain, general contentment.

8 hours through the night sounds great at 9 weeks!  Keep up the good work.
