suddenly waking early from naps at 18 weeks
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:44:50 am »
Hi there,

My LO turned 19 weeks today.  BW techniques has worked great on her and she has been on a good routine since 11 weeks, including 2 hour naps and sleeping through till 7.30 am in the morning with a DF.

However, for the past week, she has been waking early approx. 1/2 hour early (ie. after 1 hour 30 mins of nap) from her morning and afternoon naps.  I guess this would not be a big deal, but she doesn't wake up happy, she is crying,  so I figure that she is still tired and needs more sleep.  I try PU/PD with her and it doesn't really work.  I do PU/PD for half an hour and then it's time to get her up for her feed.  This has been going on a for a week and doesn't look like it is getting any better.

I have been trying to transition her from a 3 hour EASY to a 4 hour EASY, but we are kinda stuck at a 3.5 hour EASY.  Her routine used to look like this...

7.30 EAT (eats in 15 mins, very quick eater)
7.45 PLAY (plays for only about 1 hour 20 mins)
9am SLEEP (2 hours)

11am EAT
11.15 PLAY
12.30 SLEEP (2 hours)

2.30 EAT
2.45 PLAY
4pm SLEEP (about 1hr)

5.15 pm Play
6pm EAT
6.15 PLAY
7.15pm Sleep

10.30pm Dream FEED

But now.... she awakens early after about 1 to 1hour 30 mins of nap for her morning and afternoon nap, followed by lots of crying and unsuccessful PU/PD.  Then, her catnap is much longer, because I think she didn't get enough sleep in the morning and afternoon.  It really throws off the entire routine - I find us going back to a 3 hour EASY, rather than working our way up to a 4 hour EASY.

Shall I just start getting her up after 1 hour 30 mins nap in the morning and afternoon ?  I would, but she still seems tired.  A

Please help.  She has had two shorter than normal naps today and is now having a really extended catnap because I think she's exhausted.  Also, I really don't know how to get her onto a 4 hour EASY.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks !

When you switch to 4hr EASY you may need to extend her awake time to 1.45-2hrs long. Exend it slowly by 5-10mins over a few days until you find a happy medium for her awake time.

Thanks Natasha.

Do you think that she is waking up earlier because she is actually not tired enough to sleep a full 2 hours ?

I will try to extend her A time.  I've been trying for a week or so, but she is such a cranky pants when she gets overtired.

Yes it could be. Try extending the awake time slowly so she doesn't get overtired.
