sleep & illness
« on: January 04, 2007, 15:05:15 pm »
Don't know if this is the right place for this quest, but I'll try here first.

What do you do for your lo that is having sleep issues combined with illness?  I struggle with this, b/c DS (13 mo) will have fits when I try to put him down for naps/night, and may wake from short naps, etc. when he has a cold or is teething.  I know sleep training may not be appropriate, but if he has meds, isn't hungry, wet, etc what should I do?  He wouldn't fall asleep with me holding him even if I tried, and I know he needs the rest, but screams as soon as I try to put him down.  This is also a prob with NW when he's sick.  I think it's normal to have a bit of increased SA when sick, but I am just not sure how to handle it for sleep.

Thanks!
Sarah

When Alex had her cold before Christmas I gave her appropriate meds ie, Medised and vicks vapour rub and although it took a little longer to settle I still did the WIWO.  She knew that I was there for her but TBH I think that if I'd interfered any more ie holding her, it would have made her more uncomfortable.  It would be interesting to know what other BW's do as I was wondering if I was doing the right thing at the time.

Is he waking because he needs more meds?

Bram had his first cold over the last week and one night he did wake 1 hour after going down to bed which was WAY to early for more meds so I picked him up.  As soon as I did he passed out on me :o.  I think because then he wasnt flat down and could breathe better.  I held him for 10 minutes and put him back down and he stayed asleep so no harm done.

Generally speaking if you know that your LO is sick or teething you should give them extra cuddles or meds.  Although seeing as how yours doesnt like to cuddle that doesnt help you.  What happens if you just stay near and use your voice?

Thanks Stacy, that's pretty much what I did really.  She is quite independant despite the terrible sleep issues that we have had, but I don't want her to think that I wouldn't be with her when she needs me. During times of illness, I remember wanting my mum all the time. (I was always a softie and my two are no different!!!)
