In my heart I agree with the sentiment that it's respectful to the animal to acknowledge their sacrifice. I remember reading once Jonathon Porrit the old 'Friends of the Earth' bloke felt everyone who wants to eat meat should visit a slaughterhouse at 16 years old. I think I'd fail that test.

I wouldn't want to be sneaking meat into Sam but I'm not sure it's right to sit him down and make a big 'issue'. I think I'll just try and do it by drip drip i.e. give things their correct names, talk about farms properly when the issue comes up and when he's older answer questions honestly. But not do anything dramatic at the moment. Thanks.

I think you're on the right track, Emma, everything age appropriately.  :)

That's the idea.  It might not've sounded like it from my previous post, but what you describe here is pretty much what we did with Noah.  What I meant to point out in my previous post was that because of the variety of meat we eat and the fact that dh is a chef, Noah had questions pretty early and lots of 'em! :)

I was so worried about this very subject, and how i would explain to alice that, yes, chicken is actually chicken etc.  I guess i was projecting my feelings onto her though, as i had grown up on a farm and hated when the animals went to be slaughtered etc and was vegetarian for 7 years until i became pregnant with her. ::)
so anyway, when i did tell her she just said "thats nature for you!" and continued to chomp on her steak!  :o :o
