I have made a huge boo boo.
« on: January 18, 2007, 23:04:55 pm »
So with this next bubba coming, it has dawned on me that Shay's naps need to be sorted some how. Yes, I know I have left it soooo late. He is a great napper BUT the problem is he only naps in the pushchair or if we get into bed together. It has only just clicked now that with two, I won't be able to do that ::) So I could really do with some help in figuring out where to start.

It's got worse cos since I've been pregnant, I have needed a sleep and needed him to sleep so just given in and taken him to our bed for his nap. That way he has a good nap.

He goes to bed at night so well. We just leave him to settle himself, but I don't think that would work with naps, Oh I don't know where to start with it. I really need your help.

When I read you have left it late,  I thought you must be about 38 weeks pg!  Don't worry!!  There is plenty of time to get it sorted, little ones are so adaptable you'll have it done in no time. I'd say you're already halfway there if he settles himself at bedtime.

What would you ideally like?  To be able to pop him in his cot and for him to take a nap so you can deal with the baby?  I'm guessing at the moment you both get in your bed for a nap? Is there anywhere you can sleep in his room?   Even if you put some folded duvets on the floor?  (This is what I do if we have a bad nightwaking, it's not as bad as it sounds lol)  I'm thinking then you could do a sort of gradual withdrawal?  (And the ladies here are experts on that so don't worry!)

ps it's so weird thinking of life with 2 isn't it?!!

I know, can't believe we will have two :o

When I said I left it late I meant cos Shay is nearly two :-[

I would love to be able to get him to sleep in his cot, but he has never done that. I got him to sleep in it twice for a nap and the naps lasted for about 20 mins. The problem I have is he likes to be cuddled and likes skin, it's his soother. He goes to sleep stroking my face of neck and does it when he is asleep too.

I do find that at night he can't settle himself if he wakes though, would that be a similar thing to the nap problem?

Congratulations again BTW ;D

Oh I get it now!!  Doh!  ;D

Well I think good on you atleast he naps, Ellie hasn't for ages  :-\ .  Toooooo cute how he falls asleep, i guess you will miss that too hey?  If Ellie wakes up sometimes she will settle herself but because she's the only one I have the 'luxury' of just passing out on the floor in there, it's the easy option really and often she joins me and it's so sweet, I will miss it when there's a screaming baby to deal with instead.

Er, it doesn't sound like I'm really in a position to be advising you at all does it?!!!!   :-[   More like I should be starting my own thread before #2 comes along  ;D   Well, atleast you know you're not alone!

It sounds like your bedtime routine must be really good though if he just settles himself, is there anything special about that which you could replicate in the night or naptime?

And Congratulations to you too  ;D - you never know, we may get amazing sleepers/nappers next time around!

Would you be able to start by putting him in your bed and telling him that 'Mummy will be back' and leave him there for 10mins and see if he drifts off and try it that way. Then try leaving him for a bit longer if he can take it. When (or if) he is used to this you could ask him to go to his bead as mummy has a big belly ;) ;D
Would it be the right time to get him into a big-boy bed? Just a thought with the LO on it's way.

Faye,
I can't offer much in the way of advice, I'm afraid, other than, have you thought about offering something else as a comforter? Megan won't go to sleep without her thumb (since 6 weeks old!) and a muzzie (muslin square). What you could do is sleep with a blanket or something so that it has your smell all over it, which might soothe Shay? (I know this is supposed to work well with newborns too!).

congratulations, first ;D

This is what I did with little girl I nannied. And who was used to falling asleep in my lap.First I put her in her cot and stayed by her , leaving my hand on her, once she got used to this,I just staied there and put hand only when needed, then after this I sat in rocking chair reading myself and telling her to  lie down when she raised, o nce she was used to this I started to make excuses to go out of room. And all this leaded to this I was able to leave her in her room, looking at book and she falled asleep.Maybe you are able to use some of these steps?

Plenty of time!!!

What about, instead of the buggy, you could try a travel cot in the room with you downstairs.  As I am a chilminder, I don't use my upstairs and I used to allow the baby that I care for to sleep in the buggy as he used tofall asleep when I did the school run, then I realised that he would be much more comfortable in a cot so I got a travel cot in the living room, he hated it at first, but I used to let him play there, then I transfered him from buggy to cot after he'd falle  asleep, now he tries to climb in it when he's tired!!
