2 yr old fighting bedtime AND stopped napping too!
« on: January 19, 2007, 03:53:43 am »
our dd will be 2 tomorrow.  for about 3 weeks, she has been fighting bedtime.  some nights she's been up until 11pm.  we have a short, simple bedtime routine.  my dh puts her down while i'm putting our 4 month old to bed.  she's always been a pretty good independant sleeper, but for some reason now bedtime is a nightmare!  she's ok until he gets her in her room and puts her in the bed, but then she gets back up and tries to stall... like she doesn't have the right doll with her, or she needs more blankets etc.  dh tries to settle her, but she starts crying and screaming until she gets practically hysterical.  if he can calm her down, he leaves the room, but then she is out of bed again and crying.  this can go on for hours!  when he can't take it anymore, he lets her out to play in our room or downstairs to watch tv until she seems ready to go up.  (or course, the moment she is out of her room, she is perfectly fine and goes to play.)  it is like she just isn't ready to go to sleep or something, but we know she is tired!!

she gave up her afternoon nap about 2 months ago, but still really needs it.  Some days she has been in bed asleep by 6:15pm because she is so tired.  The only way i can get her to nap during the day is to go out in the car (not very realistic!) She started daycare last week (just 2 days a week) and had a 2 hour nap both days when she was there.

My dh is stressed, and our evenings are crazy and unpredictable.  we don't know what to do anymore.  dd can go to bed anytime from 6:30 to 11pm, and whether she naps during the day (daycare or in the car) doesn't seem to logically affect when she is ready for bed.  Please help!!!!

by the way, we've had a lot of major changes in the past few months... our son arrived in September, we moved to a new house 3 weeks later... also, we transitioned her to a regular bed a bit over a month ago (went very smoothly).  perhaps all these changes are causing the problems, or is this just 'the terrible twos'??

any help would be appreciated!!!

Alex does this too sometimes, tries to stall bedtime because piglet is on the floor (even though she threw him there!)  but it's usuall because she is either over or under tired.

I would think that she would need a nap, even if it's just an hour, and as she isn't having consistent naps then her routine is all over the place.  You might fine if you start her napping regularly then she will take a little time to sleep through anyway as it's a sort of adjustment for her.
Could you post her routine with and without a nap, and we can see what other BW's think.

i gave up trying to put her down for a nap after 2 weeks of naptime hell.  she would basically scream or cry for up to 2 hours (or if i was really lucky, just talk really loud!) but wouldn't sleep.  This was too stressful for both of us, plus i have a 4month old too (he was about 6 weeks when the naps ended) so i couldn't spend the time to keep going in the room to put her down or try to settle her. (when she was napping well, i would just pop her in the crib and cover her up with her blanket & kiss her and that was it!  no wind-down or anything.)  im kind of hoping that with her napping at daycare, she'll maybe get back to it at home (really, really hoping!!)

her day roughly looks like this:

7am - 8am wake up
8:30am breakfast
play til 10:30
10:30 snack & milk
10:45 outside for errands/park
11:45 lunch
1:30 walk to mailbox
2:00 playtime, tv, sometimes a bath
3:45 snack
5:00 daddy comes home
5:30 dinner
6:30 bath (if not in afternoon) and pyjamas
playtime, stories & tv until she seems ready for bed
7:30 bedtime routine (ideally!)

back in the days when she'd nap, she would go down around 1:30 until 3:30 or even 4pm, and go to bed between 8:30 and 9:00.  her daily routine does vary a bit, depending on my son's sleep schedule, and weather etc.  we've always had a pretty loose schedule with her, and that has never been a problem for her.
