Can my LO get sick if I'm sick
« on: January 26, 2007, 23:04:55 pm »
I got very sick (vomiting/diarrhea) this past weekend and shortly thereafter my LO began w/ vomiting and diarrhea.  I thought it was the solids I was giving him but the babysitter said that he vomits shortly after drinking EBM?? ???

He may have the same bug you had/have BUT he's ways better off then without the milk. If he is sick, it's not from the EBM, it's from being exposed to the same illness you were and getting it.
Breastmilk has antibodies in it specially made for YOUR baby. And when your baby is sick - the breast realizes the "illness" from the salivia and begins making antibodies FOR THAT EXACT SICKNESS in the breastmilk for him. It's pretty amazing. Continue nursing as much as possible to get liquids in him. Even if it is just staying down a little,  don't give up or switch to formula or something. The breast milk really is the best thing for him right now.

And keep yourself well hydrated too - it will help if your body is still fighting something as well.

Hope you are all feeling better soon!

Great advice.  If you'd gotten the illness a few days earlier, you might have created antibodies already to be passed on to him and he might not have gotten it at all!  Kind of handy...  :)

Sorry you and lo have been unwell.  I agree, your bm won't be making your lo sick.  A couple of years ago I too got a bug like that and my dd1 did not get sick at all.  Meanwhile everyone else around me was falling ill to it, seemingly by just being in the same room for a few minutes!!  It was extremely contagious.  Luckily my dd1 had my antibody-filled milk to keep her well.

I just had a thought that if the ebm your lo was drinking was from before you got sick, then it won't have the antibodies in it from your illness yet.

However, any antibodies that you can pass on to him will be helping him get better quicker, even though he's already sick.
