Taking short naps at day care??
« on: February 02, 2007, 16:08:07 pm »
What suggestions can I give the babtsitter to try and lengthen my 5 month old naps? She is taking several 30-45 minute naps during the day. She takes these short naps during the day and then when I pick her up at 330 she usually does not sleep until bedtime which is at 730. Then she sleeps unitl 630 usually without waking. Are we doing something wrong? Does she only need short cat naps? And is she getting enough rest for her age? She will be 5 months on Feb 9th. She does really well with routine. Should we try and enforce a nap schedule? Go down at certain times each day? I know lots of questions. First time mom!! ;D

Does she take short naps with you at home? Could you post your routine?

Where does she sleep with babysitter, is it a different type of place to yours.  ie does she put him in a buggy whilst you put him in a cot?

Is it a babysitter or a day care???  My daycare is a never-ending battle with naps.  After several meetings things are getting better.  If it is daycare and there are other babies, you have to be extremely understanding to a point.  45 minutes is one sleep cycle and lo's are going to stir at the 45 minute mark.  Couple that stirring with another lo screaming while they are playing and another lo bumping into your lo's crib because he or she is learning to crawl or walk and your lo is going to wake up.

1.  Make sure that the caregiver is not just taking her out of the crib when she wakes.  Make sure that they are at least trying to resettle.  Let them know that if she wakes up crying she is still tired and that she is only to get up if she wakes up happy and content.
2.  Recommend W2S to make naps longer (this worked for a bit)
3.  Watch your lo's disposition. If she is coming home happy and with enough energy to spend enjoyable time with you at night, she is probably doing great with the short naps.  Her consistent 11 hour sleep at night indicates that she is probably doing fine because as you no bad daytime sleep = bad nighttime sleep.

This is just a side note and I don't know if you have or will have this problem.  My lo is on the chunkier side which may or may not have to do with him having NO desire at all to crawl (loves to stand and try to walk though).  As a result, I think he often has some pint up physical energy even though he is metally tired iykwim (this is not a knock to the daycare people b/c I know they do a ton with him).  Anyway, I donated a jumper to the daycare to help with the physcial part and he has started naping better b/c he is wearing himself out more.

Good Luck!

She is on a 3.5 to 4 hour easy (very flexible) at home and at the sitters.
It is not a day care setting. It is just my dd and one other baby and only my dd for two of the days. She comes home in a great mood everyday. Sometimes she will take a cat nap during the evening and other times she will stay up until bed time. She does take the cat naps with me at home. At home she sleeps in her bed and at day care she sleeps in a play yard. The sitter says she does not wake up crying and today she tried to resettle (didnt work) She is a very active baby. Was standing with assistance at about 1.5 months. Very alert all the time.. and is always moving. I dont know if that has anything to do with any of it. This weekend I am really going to try and lengthen the naps. What should I try???

I would say that if her night time sleep is ok and the babysitter is happy with the cat naps then leave it.  I am sure that she will get into a routine with the babysitter when they get to know each other better.

I agree with pp.  You can suggest W2S, but it might be that there is just so much different there that she wants to check it all out making the shorter naps work for her.  As long as she is happy and you are getting enough time with her in the evening, I would not worry.
