Newbie - Desperate for help with naps in crib!
« on: February 09, 2007, 22:17:28 pm »
Hello - I just found this website today and have read BW book - I'm hoping someone can help answer some questions I have.
I have a 16 week old DD, 9 weeks corrected.  She has been sleeping through the night in a bassinet by our bed w/o problem for over 1-1/2 months.  She has never napped in her own room and crib, nor slept through the night in her own crib.  This is what we would like, so I set out to try this today using the pat & shush method along with the PU/PD method...
Since 8am this morning it's been a struggle and she has slept no more than 15 minutes in her crib.  It is now 2:30 pm and she is so exhausted that she can't keep her head up, her eyes are bloodshot w/ circles around them, and I'm a wreck as well.  She is currently in her crib asleep for the past 20 minutes, but it's only because she is so tired, not because she "soothed" herself to sleep.  I suspect I'm doing this wrong...???  But I don't know... does this sound right? (I followed her routine of eating every 3 hours, but because she is so tired, the Activity portion of her routine has not worked - we've gone from Eating to Sleeping - but she doesn't really sleep).
Also tips to know - she has acid reflux and milk allergy, currently on Zantac and EleCare formula or medical food.  Due to her permaturity and these issues, I held back on starting any type of routine/independence such as allowing her to put herself to sleep, because I thought she was in pain or not old enough.  I want to avoid the Cry-it-out-method, so I'm trying this now.  Any help anyone can offer would be so very much appreciated.
thank you!

I am right there with you!  My six week old sleeps perfectly fine in his bassinet (or on me! :-[), but he doesn't like to sleep in his crib.  He also has reflux like your lo.  Do you have her crib elevated to help with the reflux?  I bought a wedge too that I am going to try and use to make him feel more cozy in his crib.  My son is growing so fast he soon won't be able to fit in his bassinet so we have to make the transition soon!

Just wanted to let you know I know how you're feeling.  I would like to sleep in my bed without a bassinet in the room soon!

I'm sure others will give you some great advice, but I wanted to tell you you're not alone!  Hang in there and you'll get your lo to sleep in her crib soon!

Hi there and congratulations!  And welcome to the bw site too!  You're definitely right to avoid CIO, i'm sure BW will get you sorted!

Well firstly, well done that your dd is sleeping through the night so young!  My first suggestion would be to try putting the bassinet in her own room, will the bassinet fit into the crib?  If so, i would put the bassinet inside the crib so it's more familiar to her.  If it doesn't work today, then maybe give it a couple of days to give yourself some rest and then try again.  Also, does she have any sort of lovey or comfort item?

love from Michelle xx

Thanks for your help and encouragement - just nice to know I'm not the only one going through this.

I will try putting her bassinette in her room - unfortunately, the only thing she really clings to regularly for comfort right now is me... She does have a blanket knit from her Great Grandma that she's becoming attached to, so I will implement that into her naptime routine.  Will try again tomorrow with help of my husband!

Oh, and yes, we do have the wedge in her crib to elevate her.  With her reflux we found that we must keep her elevated when sleeping to keep her comfortable.  It works well for that purpose.
