5 month old NIGHT wakings!!
« on: February 12, 2007, 18:47:58 pm »
How old is your child? 5 months and 1 week
What’s his/her daily routine? She is on a 4 hour easy.
What’s nap routine? naps are an issue. she has a morning nap, usually 45 minutes and then an afternoon nap that is about an hour. she sometimes takes a cat nap in the evening. I am able to extend her naps on the weekends/ at day care sometimes she will nap only an hour or so ALL DAY!! and still she is a happy baby!
How long are naps? above
What's bedtime routine? Time? bedtime routine starts at 645: bath, message, pjs, bottle, cuddle, and bed. She is very easy to get to sleep and is OUT by 730.
Do you bottle or breastfed?? bottle fed
How much? or how long? she is eating 6 ounces per feeding
How many wakes per night?  2
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? She starts to whimper and make noises, does not usually cry.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? just noiess but she is awake.
What have you tried to settle?? we give paci and pat a few times and she will go back to sleep
What do you do for A time and how long is it? A times are long (I think). exercauser, sing, floor time etc.
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? none
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) yes under docs advisement she eats cereal in the morning and early afternoon
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? paci
Do they have a lovie? snoedol

I guess my questions is why is she waking at night. How can we prevent the night wakings. They are always pretty much at the same time. 10:00 pm and 200 am. Last night she started to stir at 945. so I went in before she was totally awake and gave paci and patted. she fell back into a sleep and skipped the 200am wake. was that kind of wake to sleep???

Yes that was a type of w2s.  If you do that at least three nights you may break that habit.  What time does she wake in the morning?  It could be that she is overtired because of her daytime sleep.  I would also try to not go into her room unless she is crying. You may find that she is able to put herself back to sleep without your help.

Also, I am afraid to wait until she is crying because she would be fully awake then.

She could be waking because she is hungry.  She is at the age where babies still take night feeds.  I would try to let her put herself back to sleep.  You may be shocked to find that she can do this.  If she doesn't then I would shh/pat her to sleep if you are sure she isn't hungry.
You can do w2s to break habitual waking.  If you know she isn't hungry I would do w2s since it seems to have worked for you.  Can you do w2s without the paci.  We don't really want it to become a prop.  Just stir her and then let her fall back into sleep.

You may also try to put her to bed a little earlier.  She could be restless overnight because she is overtired.

Well, last night she did not wake at all. But woke at 515. we gave paci and patted she went back to sleep and then woke at 630. It would be so nice if she would sleep until 700. does that ever happen.
Also, yesterday during the day she had a total of 1 hour nap. Then she took a 1 hour and 45 minute nap at home from 400-545. Could that be why she woke so early?? I dont know!! :o

A more consistant sch will help with the night wakings.  She will sleep more as she gets older.  Have you checked out the EASY boards?  That might help.

I wish that she could be on a more structured routine. I know that would help with the naps and night wakings. But unfortunatly I work full time and she goes to the babysitter. How should I approach her about becoming more consistent. Since she will be 6months old shouldnt she switch to two naps.
I have mentioned to the babysitter about trying to extend her naps. I dont think she wants to upset her though. She will take longer naps on the weekends only because I have extended them!  :-\

She may or may not be ready for two naps. Some babies are ready at six months and some take two naps and a little cat nap in the evening.  Does your sitter have a lot of other kids she cares for at the same time?

Above is a link where parents have discussed issues with daycare and nannies.  There may be something there about how to talk to your sitter.  You could also post a question about how moms have dealt with getting their care giver on board with the BW way ;)
