Refuses to eat food
« on: March 16, 2007, 22:50:23 pm »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there could help me with my sons eating habits.

we had Tristan eating fruit and veg puree by 6 months after introducing cereals.  he is now 7+ months and will not eat anything anymore.  he still takes the bottle and is bf.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried baby yoghurt????? My DS has trouble with anything with lumps or bumps but yoghurt works everytime. Give it a go!

Tristan is teething, no teeth out yet but you can see them there...
if it is his teething that is stopping him from eating, what do we do in the meantime about solids?

Just keep offering, offering and offering! Continue with his purees and cereal as well.  As long as he is getting his daily required milk intake that is good.  Have you tried teething tablets?  I see you are in Canada I think from your Rogers email?  I think?  :P Shoppers Drug Mart has them or so does health food stores or Superstore.  I like the Hylands Teething tablets, they have all natural camellia and belladonna extract.  They dissolve fast and my DS loves them!  I find these help and then I use the Children's Tylenol or Motrin when he is cutting the teeth. Will he eat toast?

So far we have only been giving him cereal and fruit/veg puree.  We do give him stuff for his teething, a herbal remedy (camilla, i think its called) and tylenol when it is really bad.
he was eating really well af first, but since his teething has become worse, he stopped.  you say we can try toast at 7 months?

btw, thanks for the help

No probs. Does he have any teeth yet?  Also I thought he was closer to 8 months?  We started small fingernail size pieces of toast at 8 months with butter on it, but DS did have 8 teeth already!

Riley got his first tooth at 8 months, they came fast and furious after that!

He also was not a big solids eater at that age, and didn't really eat big amounts of anything until after a year, He was thriving on breastmilk though, always at the top of the weight and height charts. Although he didn't eat huge amounts, he did enjoy some finger foods, like pieces of fruit, veggies, toast etc. When exactly did he start on solids? Some children are slower than others to progress with solids, so long as he is happy and content (most of the time lol), there is nothing really to worry about at this age.

Some great websites about feeding are http://askdrsears.com/html/3/T030100.asp and http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintroductie/vast_voedsel/rapley_guidelines.html

Would you like to post your average daily routine with typical times all feeds are offered?

I bake some rusk for DD's fingerfood + teething biscuit (I don't like to buy teething biscuit, coz they are sweet). I cut out home-made bread into long fat chunks and place them in the oven and bake them on the lowest heat, and leave the oven door slightly open. When it's dry and hard, just store them in a ziplock bag. It's great for teething, can really soothe the itchiness ;)

My lo went on hunger strikes when she was teething too.  I agree with pp, as long as he's taking his milk, I'm sure he'll be okay.  Also sometimes her appetite will go for no reason that I can figure out.  Just keep offering.

Maybe try cold purees, which my lo preferred when teething.

i am in the same predicament.... my DD is 5.5 months and just this week i didn't think that I could get enough cereal in her and then the next day she has been on solid strike.... the spoon cant even get to her mouth... She has been teething for a while now but still no teeth.. we are using the Hylands teething tablets and they are wonderful..... Is a solid strike common among teething babies?

what about numbing his gums with a partial frozen cloth and then offering cereal again? We've have moderate success with our dd. we wet a small cloth and pop it in the freezer for a bit... then let her chew on it. My dh even put an ice cube in a cloth and she went to town on it... after which she took some of her cereal. not tons but it seemed to elevate the pain...we use the tables too. ;D
