Going from two breasts to one?
« on: February 16, 2007, 21:27:00 pm »
I know that Tracy recommends using the one breast per feeding method.  I didn't get her book until my milk was in and I was established with using both breasts at a feed.  Is there a way to change and should I go the work to do so?  My son is just under 6 weeks and seems to be gaining fine.  Thanks for any advice.

I'd personally say you should stick with what is obviously working well for you. Plenty of mothers who follow BW do double-sided feeding from the beginning and find no problems using Tracy's advice of the EASY routine and her sleep methods. Tracy herself says that many mothers will find themselves moving to double-sided feeding before too long.

To move to single-sided feeding now may be possible (e.g. by using a regime of pumping after a feed) but I think the potential risks (e.g. to your supply) would far outweigh any possible benefit.

P.S I moved this from the FAQ board - that board is a 'read-only' resource. Infact it shouldn't have been possible for you to post there so I'll look into that!

I did the one side b-feeding the whole time and worked very well.

But as Samuel's mom says, if two-sided is working for you, your DS is gaining weight and sleeping fine, then stick to it.

ON the other hand, it's still early days and I'd say you could still change if you want to. What I would do, would be b-feed from one side more time than usual, and then switch at the last min to the other side. The next feed start with the last breast you used and change to the other one at the last min, just as you did before. After two days maybe you could completely do the one-side b-feeding.... I'm just thinking that this way you would give your body time to adjust to the new routine.

Having said that, I'm not sure if this would work, maybe someone that is currently b-feeding could give some ideas as well.
Good luck!

I agree that if it is working for you now then you should stick to two-sided feeding. I have done all the way through or both of my LO's. The only thing to make sure is that LO is getting hind-milk by not switching too much/too soon, and by always starting a feed with the second side from the last feed i.e. L-R and one feed then R-L at the next feed.

It sound like you are doing fine  :)

I also agree that there's no reason to switch to single sided feeding at this point - in fact, many mothers who start of single sided feeding often switch to double when they hit the 3 month growth spurt!

And welcome to the boards!  :)

I am a person who went from double to single with my eldest son.  I don't quite remember exactly how we did it, but I am pretty sure I did it like the previous poster stated.  But as most have mentioned, it is likely unecessary to make the switch right now if you don't feel there is a need.

OK, I just read in BW that the way to do it is offer the first breast for 5 minutes, then switch over and allow lo to drain it.  After about 3 or 4 days of doing this, your breasts should be producing enough to allow for single side feeding.  I think I would reduce the 5 minutes each day.
