Bassinet to Cot for 4 month old
« on: February 20, 2007, 02:29:02 am »
Hi,
My 4mth 2 wk old daughter Eva is sleeping in a bassinet by our bed for her naps and night sleeps.  she is a great sleeper, I need to start sleeping her in her cot as she is getting too big for the bassinet.  Has anyone got any advice on how to do this?  Her cot is down the hall in her nursery where I change her, we tried putting her in the cot for her catnap but she just lay there not knowing it was time for a sleep!  I have taken the mobile down as this seemed to be a distraction and she doesnt have anything over her head in the bassinet.
I dont want to freak her out by putting her in a different room and a different bed to sleep - any help with the transition would be much appreciated.  She is an angel baby and pretty cruisy and I plan on sleeping in the nursery with her on the single bed until she is settled.
Thanks,
Jo

HI Jo!  Eva is so sweet.  You sound just like I did!  At 4 months, I had my game plan ready! This is what it was: I would start off by having DS lay in his cot during A times to get used to it for a couple of days.  I would have him try his a.m nap in there the next day and the day after that his a.m and p.m nap assuming all was well. (we never did catnap in bassinet or cot, I always did it in stroller swing etc..) then the day after that I would do the night sleep.

WELL.....DH and I were letting him have his "A" time on the first day, we took some pics,(our big boy in his own bed!  :'() played some music, played with him and cooed with him in his new room...had him get used to the room etc... then I looked at DH and said:  "Or for the love of Pete, do you want to just go for it and let him sleep here for tonight?! Look, he is so happy."  We went for it!  I had the monitor glued to my ear the whole night on full blast volume, I did not sleep a wink.  Well, you guessed it, my little angel slept heavenly!  DH and I just laugh when we think back at the whole thing, it was all so thought out and gentle and we were so worried and I was so scared and didn't feel ready, and there you go!   ;D

HTH,

Aisling x

Hi Aisling,
Thanks for your reply.  My biggest problem is Eva just not knowing to sleep in her cot, I have tried the activity in there this morning then took her out then tried to put her in there for her sleep but she just lay there gazing at her hands!  She is now back in her bassinet but overtired!  argh  :)
Do I just leave her in the cot until she eventually falls asleep, I just have a feeling that she would lie there for her whole nap of 1.5 hours and not make a sound.
Anymore thoughts?
Jo :)

Hmmm, tough one, how does she fall asleep in her basinette?  Did you do the same wind down etc...?

Hm... just a thought. I don't know whether your bassinet can be separated into a small carrier bed like mine. If it can be separated into a small portable bed, you can probably put it in the cot.   ::)

This is what I did.  I had an awful time getting dd to sleep in her cot.  I had the bassinet in the cot for a couple of months before I convinced her to sleep in the cot on it's own.  She was 7 mths when she finally slept in the cot.

Thanks for your advice.  She falls asleep really quickly in her bassinet, I did try putting her in the cot using the same wind down but the nursery is just so different from our room!  Things on the walls and quite a bit lighter as the sun comes in that side, I will try the bassinet in the cot and dimming the room more and let you know how I get on.
Thanks again.
