4 mo toy frustration
« on: February 26, 2007, 15:23:18 pm »
I have a question, my son just turned four months and he is still tyring to grasp at toys and put them in his mouth- when he can't he gets frustrated and ends up in a screaming fit. Any ideas to keep him entertained by himself for awhile without him getting so frustrated?

I'm a new single mom and I really need the advice!

Hi, I split this topic off from the sticky so more people would see it.

A small shatterproof mirror is a great toy at this age.  Also, if he's having trouble grabbing toys, try giving him bigger things that he won't have trouble getting to.  My LO loves to lay on the floor and roll around and look at things.  Her sister and I going about our usual business are apparently all the entertainment she needs some days.  She also likes it if I help her grab things -- you can hold toys that are easy to grasp up to his hands so he can grab them and bring them to his mouth.  With practice, he'll get it!

Thank you, I will try that!

I find that he gets frustrated very easily-to the point where he gets very upset and i cant calm him.

This makes it very difficult to leave him for a few minutes to do errands
when did your lo start to grasp at toys?  what sort of toys did you use?

I can't really remember when dd1 started grasping at toys, with dd2 it has really only been in the last few days that she's been grabbing on to things (she was born 10/28).  I give lightweight smaller toys (though not too small) that have things like rings attached to they're easy to grasp on to.
Something like this would work out well:

Lots of babies don't like to be left at this age -- you can try something like a front carrier or a sling if you want so you can carry him and still have your hands free.  I put dd2 in the carrier quite a bit these days as its the only way I can get things done.
