Having so much trouble with independent sleeping
« on: February 26, 2007, 00:09:24 am »
My LO USED to be able to put herself to sleep.  Now she writhes and spits out her paci and cries when I even lay her down.  I am now so frustrated I don't know what to do.  I have tried W2S, pat shh and AP.  I am sooooo frustrated and tired and blaming myself.  My milk supply is being affected b/c of my stress and I just am needing some help.

Could anyone offer me some suggestions?

How old is your LO? What is your routine?

Sorry, I should have included that initially.  She is 5.months, 3 weeks old, we haven't started solids, she is EBF, 15 pounds and no health issues.  Prior to the last two weeks, she was on a fairly solid EASY 3.5 hour routine.  I was able to extend her 45 min. naps and eliminate one of two night feedings.  I started the W2S and have been doing that for 7 days with no breaks in her habit.  Also, doing it at night with no change in habit.  I have noticed a vast change in her strength over the last few days - she is wiggling out of her swaddle and spitting out her paci and arching her back.  It may be due to being overtired.  I tried extending her A time but that didn't work out too well.  She can only stay awake for about 1.75 hours.  Now, I am unable to extend her 45 min. naps, and she won't let me lay her down in the crib awake.  I have resorted to putting her to sleep by holding her then laying her down.  I tried the shh/pat and that had no effect.

Our "routine" prior to this meltdown was:
6:00 a.m. awake
7:00 a.m. EAT
7:20 a.m. ACTIVITY (playing in exersaucer, etc.)
8:00 SLEEP
9:30/10 Awake (I was able to eek out an extended morning nap for a while)
10:30 EAT
10:45 ACTIVITY
12:00 SLEEP
1:30 Awake
2:00 EAT
2:20 ACTIVITY
3:30 SLEEP
5:00 Awake/EAT
6:30 bedtime routine
7:00 SLEEP
10:30 DF
1:00 a.m. habitual wake

I don't have a routine now - she wakes up at 5:45 a.m. and fights going back to sleep at night.  Our day centers around her 45 min. naps and her feeds are still about 3-3.5 hours apart.  I am considering just accepting the 45 min. naps and moving on.  I was so stressed the other night that she couldn't nurse (no let down).  I've lost 4 pounds and am pretty miserable.  Do you think she is growing?  Maybe teething?  I feel like we are going backwards instead of forwards.

Have you tried PU/PD as she is old enough? Mine only 3 months so won't do that yet but I have a nap problem too and feel tied to the house!!!

Thank you so much.  I did try it last night at 5 a.m. and she went to sleep.  But this morning, after 30 min. nap I couldn't get her back to sleep.  So lost.  Thanks for your concern.  Good luck to you too.
