Severe napping dilemma! 7 weeks and no change!
« on: February 24, 2007, 17:29:32 pm »
Hello,
I am new to this forum but have been utilizing the BW method for 7 weeks now with my 13 week old.  I have reached a breaking point with her naps and don't know what to do.  I started the pu/pd when she was 6 weeks and have been doing it consistently since  She does eventually go down but it takes a long time and she cries so hard.  I have tried everything from extending her wake time to decreasing her wake time  as well as little or no stimulation to some stimulation.  I have tried to follow her cues like yawning and rubbing of the eyes and they are very tough to follow.  Sometimes she seems tired after only 30 min of Awake time and other times after 2 hours.  I usually miss the window and she gets very worked up and proves to be ever so challenging to put to sleep.  She is on a 3 hour EASY but only takes 30-45 minute naps so is always up before it's time to eat again.  Swaddling has helped a bit but she screams when I begin to swaddle her and it makes it that much harder to calm her down before her naps.  I don't understand why she still doesn't go to sleep on her own and then stay asleep.  She is my second child but i feel like i am a new parent as i have no clue what to do anymore.  My day is consumed by her naps and putting her down makes me so frustrated because no method seems to work.  She is otherwise a very happy baby and does fine at night (thank goodness).  I am going on 7 weeks of letdown after letdown and it is seriously affecting my relationship with my husbad and my children.  I feel like i am getting nowhere with my new baby.  I did read some other similar scenarios and will begin to help her get through the cycles of sleep to lengthen her naps.  If there is any advice that any of you can povide me on what do do I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome to the site. First of all PU/PD can be very stimulating for a young baby could you try the Shh/Patt method instead. Instead of me typing all the details out for you check out the FAQS section for more details. Come back to me with more questions. Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? Could you post your routine?

I am breastfeeding.  She is on a pretty flexible schedule as i am a say at home mom.  She eats every 3-3.5 hrs.
awake 730
nap 830
will sleep anywhere from 45 min to 1 hour
eat 945
play
nap1145
play
eat 1245
play
nap 245
play
eat 400
play
nap 500
eat 545
bath 645
last feed 715
bed 730

This is definately not an every day shedule, but it's pretty close.  The problems i have are pre-nap.  Sometimes she seems tired after an hour of play and other times after 2 hours,i put her in the sling to wind her down for about 10 minutes and then wrap her and put her in bed.  Sometimes she does ok and only fusses for a few minutes when other times she will just cry and cry.  I try to be as routine as possible so she knows when it's naptime.  Her bedtime routine works great and she never fusses wheni put her down.  She typically only gets up once a night to eat and then holds off until after her first nap in the am to eat again.  it's just so very challenging to put her down and i really don't know what the cause is.  I still wrap her because if i don't she will scratch her face and gag on her fingers.  she is 14 weeks today and i know it's close to the time when i'll have to stop wrapping her.  i am so desperate to get this figured out that i hardly go anywhere because when i do, it just makes it that much harder to get her down for her nap.  I dread them.  She can sleep longer than 45 min and has even slept for 2 hours!  that is very rare however but always a good thing.  any suggestions you have would be great!  I don't always get a chance to log on so i'm sorry if it amy take a few days to get back.  Thanks so much!
