I don't know how to change to 1 nap
« on: March 05, 2007, 19:08:10 pm »
11 months starting to get up at 5am instead of 7am. Maybe getting too much naps with me - although at daycare he gets only 1 hour of total napping there because of the situation (loud atmosphere)...With me he naps 2, 2 hour naps 9:30-11:30 and 2:30-4:30. Sometimes they are 1.5 each, sometimes they are 2.5 and 1, but mostly on average is 4 hours of napping a day. I always feel like he needs that to catch up from not napping on daycare days. But for some reason out of the blue he wakes up 2 hours earlier now. I know they say 1 year old on 1 nap, but I have no idea how I would get him to that. He is tired by 9:30, even when he woke up at 7 he is tired by 9:30. Now with early wake up his naps usually start at 9:00am. If there is 1 nap - what time would that nap be? Would he really be able to stay up from 11:30 until bed at 7? Or if the nap doesn't start until like 11:30 how does he make it to 11:30? And what is the eating schedule for this? How do you transition from 2 naps to 1?? I'm so confused at this. Do you think that is my problem here? I posted another about his early wake up and wanting to try W2S, but I'm also curious about his napping situation...

Hi! Im kind of going through the same thing too....but my baby is now 14 months old. I do remember that he went through a funny early waking phrase at about 11 months, and we also thought about reducing his nap time. It eventually worked (that is, not waking at 5-6 am-he now wakes on average at 6.45-7...VERY reasonable i think!)  by doing the adviced later nap...and we only let him sleep for an hour in the morning, and an hour to an hour and a half in the afternoon. At the moment we are trying to cut out the morning nap. It works really well sometimes. We have to push him through a bit late morning, and give him his lunch at 12, then he gets a bit of a sugar rush from the food and ends up being able to stay up that extra hour, and he goes down at about 1.15. We then lewt him sleep as long as he wants, which is usually just less than two hours. We are no way near the finishing line, but i think the strategy works. I would recommend doing it in stages. Try reducing the nap times, for two naps a day and hope that he wakes at little later. Then implement the one nap plan....give it a go and see what happens. I pass on my sympathy, as I know how utterly exhausting early risers are! Be brave! It wont last forever! Hang in there!

Just wanted to say I agree with the previous post. a couple of things that have helped with early wakes for us:

1. leaving him in his room until 6/6:30---or whenever you want your wake time to be (7 might be too difficult right now).
2. push out the morning nap until the time it "shoud" be within reason and cutting it back to 1hr max, we are now on 30min am naps.
3. limiting total nap time to 2hrs.
so try:
wake 5
leave in crib til 6/6:30
nap 1 9-9:45
nap 2 1:30-3
bed and asleep by 6:30/7

For us, I try not to let my son make up for early wakes with naps. I would rather put him to bed 15min early. I am aiming for 13hrs total sleep--so 11hrs night/2hrs naps.
I have noticed that if he sleep 2.5hrs or the other day he had 3hrs in naps---he wakes early the next day. The day he had 3hrs of naps--sure enough he only slept 7pm-5am that night.

Is it possible for you to get him to bed early the days he only sleeps 1hr at daycare?
